335i at Watkins Glen

Here's some video from Watkins Glen a few weeks ago... last event of the year, sadly. I was having trouble all weekend with my GoPro, and when I finally got some good video, my external mic started to crap out! I spliced together a couple of laps where the audio wasn't cutting out too bad, so not a total loss.

It's been a few years since my I've been up to the Glen, so with the repave a couple years ago, and running the full course this time (last time was in the NASCAR short course config), it was like an entirely new track to me. But once getting up to speed, lap times settled in at about 2:18.

I am absolutely loving the car in it's current form...actually thinking of breaking from my plan to leave it as is, and work a little bit more on "adding lightness" : )

One of the best tracks in America. Very close to my hometown too... seen Nascar tons there over the years. Would love to get my F30 out there someday. I hear BMW CCA Genesee Valley Chapter is having an event there this month....

I would be down for a track day there. Not a bad drive from long island

Yeah, it's an amazing track...such great flow, and so fast. It takes some commitment to get it right, but worth the effort. Climbing the esses flat out, exiting onto the back straight at 125+ ... I was smiling every single session.

How are your brakes holding up. I think the msport brakes are terrific at VIR, but heard Watkins Glen is really hard on brakes and to get track pad if I plan to run it someday there.

Absolutely get track pads for the Glen. I use PFC 08 pads with my M Sport calipers/rotors... and Castrol SRF fluid.

What's your oil consumption like during your track weekends?

My stock 2014 N55 with 100,000 miles on it consumed about 1 quart of oil this past weekend with NJ Chapter at Shenandoah. I was sharing the car with my GF so it was being run in back to back sessions.

Oil used: Castrol EDGE European Formula 0w-40

Honestly, I've never had any issues with oil consumption. I used to change the oil every 7500 miles or so when it was a daily driver, and now that it's mostly a track car, I change it in the spring before the season starts... I haven't had issues with any oil level warning lights between changes.

My N55 is stock as well, and I use Castrol Edge 5w-40. I have always run the car hard; initial break-in was fairly aggressive, and I had it on the track with just under 1000 miles on it.

How are you measuring your oil? Is the idrive system accurate enough to judge 1 qt?

Filled it with 6.5 quarts 1000 miles ago and iDrive system indicated it was "max". I know iDrive is not the most accurate system, but there aren't that many ways to measure oil in a convenient fashion. At the conclusion of the HPDE where my GF and I shared the car, the car gave a "low oil" warning. When I arrived home, I topped it off with 1 quart and it is now back at the "max" line.

I'll monitor it for the next few weeks.

Oil used was Castrol EDGE 0w-40 (European Formula) and the N55 has over 100,000 miles on it.

Love how the car looks. Your car has been making a real compelling case to me for dual duty work

Thank you! Yes, the car is fantastic on track now, but it's still perfectly reasonable as a street car for the most part. There are a couple of mods that detract a bit from street comfort (e.g. Tension Strut spherical bearings, race seats), but even with these it's more comfortable than a stock BRZ, for example. And I really enjoy the "sleeper" aspect on the track ; )

I thought I was done modding this car, but I will probably continue to pick away at adding "lightness" and maybe a tune for some more power.

Nice run! What overlay is that? Are you using Harry's? Also, where are you mounting your external mic?

Thanks!

I'm using RaceChrono, and importing the data file, along with the GoPro video file, into RaceRender. I clip the external lavalier mic to the rear tow hook; it has a long enough cable to run all the way from the GoPro on the windshield, hidden behind molding all the way to the trunk.

Wow 265 sq? How much camber are you running front and rear? I was under the impression 255 on a 9J was about as wide and square I could go without severe camber front and rear!

I'm running between -3.0° and -3.2° up front. Also, I have a mild front fender roll (hard to even notice). At this point, I think I could squeeze in 275s on 18x10s... planning to try 275s next season, and if there's still some room, I may go to a 10" wheel.

Nice! Three degrees doesn't seem too severe. I just don't like the slammed/stance look where you can tell there is camber.

Do you run this config track only, or dual duty?

When I ran the car a lot on the street, I usually dialed the camber back to -2.0° ... these days, I just leave it.

What suspension are you running? Ohlins/swift?
