RPM and MPH

(Almost) All cars have logic every year or X miles. Only BMW is something special...because it is free.

I do it by mysefl too and will. I want to keep my car as you.
Oil change depends on RPM more, than MPH.

So I got the wife's 340i xDrive on the Rhino Ramps last night and crawled under the car for the first time, in anticipation of doing the first oil change this weekend. I was surprised by a couple of things.

First, the 340i does not have a drop-down door for the oil pan compartment. It's just an opening (no door or hatch). The same is true for what appears to be the front differential drain plug (at least I think it's the front diff drain plug). I know what you're thinking -- the dealership took them off for some reason or they were inadvertently missed on the line. However, we bought the car new (six miles) and there appear to be no hinges or anything else that would suggest that engineers wanted a door/hatch covering the drain plugs.

Second, there is no front/center jack point nipple as there are on other models. Where that jack point protrusion is/was on other models is now a flat surface that is consistent with the surface of the surrounding area in front of the oil pan.

I was hoping to use front/back center jack points with the floor jack so that I could use jack stands on the four jack points along the side frame (behind front wheels and in front of back wheels). The ramps simply do not provide enough lift to work comfortably under the car.

Any thoughts or insight on these observations would be greatly appreciated.

I'm curious... is the oil filter housing on the B58 plastic or aluminum? I remember there being a recall for the N20s to replace the plastic oil filter housing with an aluminum one...

4K imo is a bit excessive and a waste if you are using synthetic. but thats just me, prob no real benefits but to each his own

Some do an initial oil change around 2-4K mi after break in but other than that it's a waste to do oil changes earlier than every 7.5K mi. with full synthetic oil.

Can someone confirm, is the B58 oil pan aluminum or metal?
Same for the oil pan plug, is it aluminum or metal?

Thanks,
Mike

It's easy. Process is almost same as any car except for oil change. Try doing it yourself. It's much more rewarding

Aluminium is a metal, guess you mean steel?

B58 oil pan is listed as being die-cast Aluminium
Plug should be steel

Did my oil change last night after work. Definitely not hard at all. I always did oil changes in the past with my previous cars but for some reason, working on BMWs is nerve-racking. Guess I want everything to be perfect.

That’s correct, sorry about that. I meant steel.
Awesome, thanks for the confirmation, just wanted to be sure. So when I put the oil drain plug back on, I didn’t torque it. Just put new crush washer and tightened until it was snug. Then gave it a little more to be secure.

Many posts about after-market window tint (installed at a shop of course), favorite BMW color, after-market lights (installed at a shop of course), etc etc etc... I don't care if modern oil is created by the hand of God Himself. I'm performing mid-interval changes within the 50,000-mile service period and every 5,000 miles thereafter. That's why I'm a little disappointed and frustrated with BMW's engineers for locating the filter housing in the ass crack and under air hoses and a fuse box.
I agree with your views. I used to do my 123d every 5,000 km, and I'll do the F30 every 10,000 km.

BMW changed from Castrol to Shell supplied oils in January 2015. I see on their site they recommend Helix Ultra ECT C3 5W-30.

Oil is Cheap

I just took delivery of a new 440i (MPSK, Track Handling pkg, 6 sp - very fun car). I am old school, especially with turbos. If you don't mind replacing a very expensive, very hot, very fast spinning part in a few years, please follow BMW's wonderful recommendations. And, BTW, the fast spinning thing is now integral with the exhaust manifold....that should make it cheaper to replace . Otherwise, like my friend says, even oil made by the hand of god should be replaced every 5k or sooner (sooner). I'm sure that many owners plan to return the car in 2-3 years. I am not that owner. Oil is cheap.

Just wanted to update this, as I finally had my 1st oil change service performed. They did in fact, use BMW TwinPower Turbo Oil (83-21-2-365-954) 0W-20 LL14 with an OEM filter (11-42-8-583-898). The service interval is now 8000 miles (as per iDrive).

Was a pretty painless procedure (It was nail-biting the whole time, as I hate taking my car in for service). They had me in and out pretty quickly and respected my car the whole time (was creepily watching from a far). They also didn't mind my mods either.

This looks like a fairly simple oil change. What about the the on board computer? Any special procedures for this? I owuld prefer this oil change I perform not effect the existing counter.
