Brake judder 440i M Sport Plus

Have any of you guys had any issues with the msport breaks becoming warped ? My cars 3 in December and has only covered 22k miles.

After driving the past few days I've noticed when braking a slight judder, I think my brakes could be warped.... surely this shouldn't be the case for a car that's only done 22k and less than 3 years old.

It's never been near a track, and I don't drive like a mad man

I've got it booked in for a check over on Monday, anyone else had similar experience rectified under warranty?

What is the condition of the discs? Any corrosion building on the edges.

I find on my car, that if not used most days during wet/humid periods, discs easily rust overnight. Doesn't take much to get a bit of judder. Sometimes a few hard braking actions will clear it. But even the smallest amount of rust build up left near the out edge of the disc faces can cause a bit of judder.

Discs don't typically warp. Usually some kind of contamination, pad transfer, or corrosion build up.

My car does sit for long periods of time without use, could be that... the disks look ok from my inspection but somethings not right. I've got it booked in for Monday so will let you know the outcome!! Here's hoping it's a warrant job if somethings wrong

Sounds like a bit of surface corrosion (rust), get the car up to temp and a clear bit of road and do 4 or 5 brakes from 60 to zero and it will get rid of it

Any time the car has been standing and it rains, the rust starts

Assuming you've confirmed it isn't a surface contamination issue, I had a warped rear disc on my 335d GT M Sport brakes when it was around 2 years old... I actually changed out my fronts first as I assumed it would have been on the front but turned out to be a rear one - still it was a good excuse to get grooves & dimples all round... Don't know what caused it but suspect it could happen at any point if they are hot and you hit some surface/flood water or for example where I live we have steep hills with fords at the bottom... I did high miles & never had it before & not had it since - just one of those things... At the end of the day the discs are just as much a consumable as the pads so no big deal... Oh, & to add, I would expect it to be classed as wear & tear...

I had a front disk warp on my 440i. I changed the disks and pads myself to avoid dealer tax, plus I wanted it fixed quickly.

The warp was pretty pronounced and produced a noticeable judder on braking (passengers also could feel it quite clearly).

I've noticed that my discs rust very quickly, I appreciate it is a very fie layer of oxidisation and always tap the brakes a few times. I've not noticed any detriment to braking though.

^This

The front discs on my 330d only managed 16K before they needed replacing thanks to surface corrosion. If you don’t use the car every day and leave it where rain and moisture can get at the discs then this problem is inevitable, I’m afraid.

Kind of hoping the same happens with mine - it's really bad, tried giving it a good few blasts to clear the surface but didn't make much difference.

The disks look clean now but the juddering when braking hasn't gone away.

Can't see why I should have to pay for new disks, wouldn't expect them to fail within the warranty period especially considering my low mileage.

Depends on the problem, if corrosion, it's wear and tear.

From your typical User Manual:

Quote:
Brake disc corrosion
Corrosion on the brake discs and contamination on the brake pads are furthered by:
▷ Low mileage.
▷ Extended periods when the vehicle is not used at all.
▷ Infrequent use of the brakes.

Corrosion occurs when the minimum pressure that must be exerted by the pads during brake applications to clean the discs is not reached.

Should corrosion form on the brake discs, the brakes will tend to respond with a pulsating effect that generally cannot be corrected.
A lot of brake judder or pulsing is not due to manufacturing defects in the discs.

Well it's still with BMW, turns out the front disk inside edges are extremely corroded and they are in the process of getting approval from BMW to replace the front disks and pads.

Note that the outside of the disk is in perfect condition, it's as if the inside pad hasn't been applying the same pressure to the disk as the outside pad.

Will see tomorrow...

Probably nothing more than what we've already discussed.

My experience, brakes with fixed callipers, discs will most likely corrode more on the inside face. The inner faces are more likely to stay damp and rust more when left a while. Even with equal braking pressure, the outside therefore cleans more easily.

Floating callipers, it is normally the opposite, the outside can corrode more due to the way the friction is different on light braking across the sliding surfaces/guides. The inner pad rubs more readily (initial contact as brakes are used) and typically wear faster as well.

Good call, if you get the parts replaced under warranty.

Good result...now get driving!

Remember rear brakes take more use than years back, so often the front brakes don't always get a good workout as we drive.
