Battery Replacement and Coding

Hi folks,

Looking for a bit of advice. My wife’s friend has an F30 diesel that needs a new battery.
It’s currently got an AGM 90Ah/900A/900CCA, the aftermarket batteries I can get are 95Ah/850A or an OEM which is a superseded one, though I’m unsure of the specs. The parts supplier I use for the aftermarket one said he thinks the genuine will be 92Ah, though it’s probably not that important.

I’ve researched the coding required for a battery change, and it looks pretty straight forward. Firstly registering that the battery has been changed, looks like either INPA or ISTA will do. Secondly, changing the battery capacity in NCSExpert, again, pretty straight forward.
I’ve got an E91 and have done various bits of coding on it, so familiar with the process.

My question is relating to the battery capacity, as I’ve not had the car to plug into, I’m going from what I’ve seen online, and it doesn’t look like 95Ah is an option in NCSDummy, so does that mean if I manually enter 95Ah AGM in the .man file, it’ll throw an error? In which case, should I leave the capacity as it is at 90?

If this is in the wrong section, please let me know.
Thanks in advance!

You want to code it as close as possible to the actual, but don't be concerned if the software doesn't allow it to be exact. Say the only options are 90Ah and 105Ah and you've got a 95Ah battery. Leave it at 90Ah, as at 105Ah you'd overcharge.

Leave capacity as is, only battery registration is needed.

Thanks to you both, exactly what I wanted to hear as it’s the same conclusion I came to, just needed reassurance as it’s not my car. Thanks again!

Battery change => erase coding?

I've hunted around here without quite finding my answer. Forgive my poor researching skills. I've got to replace my 2015 F30 OEM battery. I can code the car for the new battery but wondered if when I disconnect the old battery, will I erase the other coding that's been done on the car? I wouldn't _think_ so but it would be a pain to discover otherwise after putting in the new battery.

answer is ambiguous....

Is it:

"No coding will stay" = None of the code will stay, it will all be gone... ?

OR

"No, Coding will stay"

another question:

anyone considered putting / replacing with lithium battery ?

Lithium batteries aren't cost effective, even if you manage to get 15 years out of one.

People will want Lithium because it is good technology, not cost effective.
Many people put spoilers on their car or change wheels to fit bigger tyres, but none of those mods are cost effective.

People will want lithium because they've heard that it's good technology. They don't work any better. Of course that won't stop people from using them, people installing mods that don't work better than stock is what keeps the mod manufacturers in business.
