This happens every time BMW rolls out a new model year.

I loaded up a 435i xDrive convertible with M-sport for a whopping $77,725! After tax here in Chicago, that's about $85,000 for what is effectively a 335i convertible. The entry-level luxury segment has never entered this kind of territory before. Why not get an M4 convertible? I remember when the M5 barely eclipsed the $80,000 mark. I just can't wrap my brain around it!

Yeah these cars are getting a bit too expensive. I'm in the market for a 435 and my buddy just got an IS350 F sport for half the lease payment. With a better quality interior.

Convertible in Chicago? I lived in River North for three years. I surmise that you would be able to "drop the top" approximately two times per year.

Make no mistake--I hardly want one. I was just exploring the BYO tool. That said, plenty of people here have convertibles.

the front seats are so much better in the convertible, they look nice!

But yeah that price is steep! M3/4 territory and not to shy from a 650i convertible.

BMW's very proud of all their F30 variants these days. There isn't all that much competition for luxury convertibles though, that's probably why they feel they can charge those prices.

Here that 4 series is well over the equivalent of $90,000. M4 is well over $100,000.

My last 325i cost more than a full spec 550i costs in the USA and it was built here.
You guys have extremely cheap cars in the USA, especially seeing as our average salaries are nowhere near as high as yours for the same positions and qualifications.

Let's be honest, any BMW will double in price once you start clicking the option boxes.

It is an expensive car...but if you do a market survey on how many other 4 passenger, folding hardtop convertibles their are you're going to be stuck with a VW Eos or Chrysler 200. A loaded E350 Cabrio will cost you about the same with a soft top and all the same option packages. Convertibles are a small niche and folding hardtops are rare.

Be a little less gratuitous with the options (active cruise control, parking assistant, concierge, LED lights) and the price starts to get more reasonable. If you're going to check every box be prepared to pay the bill.

The E93 could easily get into the $65k range and didn't have any of those fancy options you checked - so that's where your extra $10k is going. But yes, with more standard options you could get an M4 convertible loaded for only about 10k more if you opt to skip the carbon brakes.

That's the beauty of BMW. You want a $77k 4 series convertible? You can have it. You want to save $20k and get a 428 convertible? Cool you can also have that. Keep in mind Msrp is only one aspect. In a few months these cars will be selling for invoice +. Add in bmws inflated residuals and you can lease a nicely optioned 4 drop top for $600-700.

The same model here in Australia (rear wheel drive only) starts at $137,000!

Even with the exchange rate of Us$1 to AU$0.94 it's much much more expensive here.

MSRP at $19,800 less than the version you mentioned.

The superfluous options make a HUGE difference!

Yeah well this is no entry level car. You put up a fully loaded luxury sports sedan that has AWD and is a convertible. S5 convertible is $70K before taxes and all options.


You're optioning out a VERY specific car, that appeals to very few buyers.


And what happens when you put M performance parts on it... it goes into M5 territory?!


You can build and create whatever you want, but don't try to pawn off the 435xi convertible coupe as an "entry level" luxury sports car.

You've added at least $9,150 worth of options that were not available prior to the F33.

Apparently you weren't paying very close attention when you lived here. There are more convertibles here than I ever saw in Texas and the reason is there's so much nice weather in the spring, summer, and fall you have months and months of top down driving weather. In Texas you're lucky if you get three good weeks in the spring and the fall. The rest of the time it's too blooming hot to drive top down. I'm constantly amazed how many 'verts I see in Chicago and how much they drive top down.
