Will 430D lowering springs work with a 420D?

Hey guys,

Someone local to me is selling a set of F32 lowering springs. They are off his car (430D) and have only covered 1000 miles. I drive a 420D and he assured me they will fit but I'm not sure as the 6 cyl engine will weigh more than the 4 cyl which will have a bearing on suspension so thought I'd ask here. Both are non Xdrive.

Cheers.

IIRC they'd work; but the spring rates will be for the heavier engine and won't lower as much; but they'd still lower your car

Cheers for the reply! They're 30mm lowering springs which I believe will really only lower 20mm if the car has factory M suspension already, and if they won't even lower a 420D 20mm I guess there's no real point in getting them haha.

I would think they would be incredibly stiff as they are designed for a much heavier lump up front.

It'll be a compromise in both respects won't do what it's designed for and will likely mess up the handling of the car and won't look as you want it to.

Best you buy the correct product for the application and fit once, job done. Alought likely more expensive to do, it will save you money in the end.

Thanks for the replies, fellas. You're right, going to go with either Eibachs or H&R.

My recommendations would be for Eibach's over H&R every day; the H&Rs can be really quite firm

Eibach's are much better suited

Exactly what I've just had fitted, alongside all new Bilstein B4S shocks and every arm/link to my F31

The car drives & handles superbly now and takes the rough roads local to me much, much better

And bouncy as the 20d shocks won't be up to the task.

Having said that, it depends on the brand of spring as some are generic for a range of (non M) engine sizes and only stiffen up the rates within the tolerance window of all the damper flavours available.

Which kit did you go for mate? Pro or pro sport? Would you recommend upgrading the standard M sport shocks too? Cheers.

Pro (black). Don't go for the sport (red) springs.

Use the dampers recommended on Bilstein's catalogue, which if M sport will be "B4 - for M technology suspension". That is what he meant by B4 'S' dampers, which are mild upgrade over stock, in the order of ~ 10% stiffer.

As my puppet master TurboWeasel said

Bilstein B4S shocks with all new Sachs top mounts all round (and all new OEM BMW rubber bits/bump stops/dust boots/gaskets etc) and Eibach pro it springs

Sportline springs (the red ones) lower far too much and you need B8s for those; they'll kill standard dampers or B4's etc

But the B4S shocks and Eibach pro-kit springs work superbly and I'll always highly recommend them

It's all in my project thread which is linked in my sig below
