Tyres age
Hi
I recently bought a set of used OEM wheels in great condition with decent winter tyres and good tread from an eBay seller. He was a very decent chap helping with some extra things. Yesterday I went to a tyre shop and on inspection the chap pointed out the tyre codes which indicate they are from 2009 / 2010. And said they recommend 5 years as normal life so wouldn’t swap them over. So, what to do next? Back to the seller and complain (but I didn’t ask tyre age with hindsight) or carry on using them? There’s no obvious perishing or cracking but the tyre chap has created second thoughts…. hadn’t budgeted for a new set!

I don't think you've any recourse with the seller. I wouldn't be keen on 12yo tyres though - a new budget set would be a better bet IMO.

Tyre compund will degenerate / become harder as they get older. It's the only thing between you and the road, while tyre age is not mandatory for cars advice is 6 years, but depending on how stored / used....don't gamble with it.

This is a big topic in the Caterham world.
5 years is the accepted maximum age. After that the compound tend to age harden quite significantly, which shows itself as less grip, especially in the wet. My road tyres on my Seven are 5 years old now, and knowing that I'm going to be changing them this winter, I've literally not been for a blat in the Caterham without stopping off to do a few doughnuts.

Example below but I've read on a few sites that most brands say 10 years:

My front winter tyres are now 5 years old still have 4mm tread and the compound is as hard as normal summer tyres. Rears by comparison (same make) were new last year and there is a marked difference in the softness of the compound.

When I sold my Elise the tyres were 10 years old and my mechanic always said I needed to drive it harder as the compound was hardening. 4 years later and I saw it was up for sale with the same old tyres still on it, AD07 LTS.
