I wonder if you can sell the TV on afterwards?

You can't re-sell their Sky Q boxes as they are loaned but if these TV's effectively have a Q box built in so to speak, will they restrict you selling them on?

Personally I have invested in a 5.1 Sonos setup which likely blows this thing out of the water audio wise and I can just upgrade my TV every 5 years or so.

Since you can't record looks it's like a fancy version of Now TV using a version of the Q user interface software and 4K streaming. People with families are going to need very good internet to be able to stream multiple UHD content at the same time.
Agreed, I also read a bizarre anomaly that a few of the sets were cheaper to rent than to buy. Maybe £40 or so in the £800.

I can't see it being long before the idea is scrapped.

It's not "cheap" either and you're potentially locked in for 4 years:

£634 - 43" TV
£1248 - Sky Ultimate
£60 - Dolby Atmos
£1200 - Sports - which is probably why most people get Sky in the first place
£528 - Cinema
£60 - Kids
______

£3730

Everyone takes sports, cinema and kids? Must check my sub then

It's a decent mid-range TV with presumably decent sound for less than the cost of separates.

Of course you can't record shows as it's streaming only, so that alone may put people off.

UHD is quoted at around 25Mb. since you can get virgin 100Mb for 24 quid at sign up, thats 3/4 streams at once covered.

I can see this selling in reasonable numbers. i dont think sky would invest time and money on it on a whim, it'll be researched well internally.
also the relatively well healed members of this expensive car forum seem to be forgetting that generation pcp which follows them have been brought up on mobile contracts which dont stack up, car contracts which see them with nothing at the end, so i reckon they'd see it as a deal to get a better tv for 13 quid a month. thats one less avocado on toast breakfast....

No recording - you can add shows to a playlist.

someones got to pay for those satelites.

seriously though, what is the cost of a satelite and when must they be paid for? they'll have to consider primary streaming if they run out of bandwidth to satelites. maybe they already have.

SKY's existing model is dead. They need to compete with streaming and this is an into. There will be a UHD box soon that needs no satellite or perhaps their own TV either.

Sky don't own the satellites. They rent the bandwith from SES, a Luxembourg-based company who have a fleet of satellites. Contract was extended earlier this year through to at least 2027.

Sky Italia already offer this I believe so I doubt it will be long before something similar is available here.

So for a 55inch TV you are paying 1600 over 2 year but with a big lump up front. Why on earth would you do that over buying a very good 55inch and sound bar and just use the many 0% apr deals?

I think take up will be low until they add the ability to record and store programmes.

They should have called it Sky Lounge and given it multi-colour lights you can play around with

So the TV package will always be full price, none of the 50% off that most people get each year by threatening to cancel?

Monthly contract is not a substitute for 50% off the package so I can't see that being a big seller.

Also, you can cancel the TV package but carry on paying for the TV? Begs the question why not just buy a TV with soundbar in the first place.

We cancelled Sky about 18 months ago and we were on the 50% off deal, I would have cancelled about 5 years before that if we had been paying full price.

Each to their own.

For me I've no idea why you would put the TV on rental. Just buy it outright (its a relatively cheap HD TV!) and then treat it as a dish less Sky package. End of.

Lots of people seem to be worrying its a £100+ package overall, so would current SKY if you added a TV into it also.

Personally I see the value in a simple stand alone TV (that I can mount with no visible cables) and run Netflix and basic SKT on it. I dont think SKY are aiming it a TV gurus who need and want the very latest 8K QOLED etc. Its a convenience package if you have decent BB.

I think you can stream sky TV via a Firestick.

Personally I don't know anybody who has it but I am rather hoping it falls flat on its arse and Sky ditch it and just provide two options:

1. A box which uses the internet to stream channels. Mostly for people who want to record.
2. An app which runs on Apple TV, Firestick etc which does the same as the box but no ability to record.

Streaming is the current, let alone the future and Sky need to get onboard. We find ourselves watching everything on the Apple TV these days.

Slightly off topic but we ditched Sky a while back and just use Freeview and catch up on the TV. Do miss the recording facility of Sky, what’s the best way to achieve recording? Don’t really need a separate Freeview recording box as the TV receiver does that.

Most modern TVs allow recording out to a USB port. Appreciate your current might not have that but I like the option of being able to size it yourself.

On Topic.
I registered interest for SKY Glass but they've not followed up with much more than an acknowledgement due to some early issues. As I recall SKY Q was a dog originally and thus SKY are not great at initial product release.

I also just found out our new House has an Ariel fitted already and its inside the loft! Thus we, and the neighbours, will have no natty Ariels.

Manhattan freeview record box. We picked one up from Argos for £130. Works fine.

Sure, the UI is not Sky Q slick but its fast enough and works as you would expect.

Edit - Just re-read your post fully, USB might be an option as said above but when I looked into this it just didn't work well with our 2018 TV, plus you can't do things like series link and the recordings view was not easy to figure out if you had lots of them.
