No way I’d do Vmax these days as it’s 155mph minimum, last time I did that was about 10 years ago.

Back in the 90s for me it was only about 110mph

I remember borrowing my new bosses Astra GTE 16v redtop when he went skiing and my co car hadnt arrived.... I might have done 100mph before but this was a different level....

So on my morning commute, I nipped to the local test track and managed 134mph...

Digital speedos were brill!

Was that an option the digital speedo as I remember going for a white knuckle ride in one and have no recollection of the speedo which would’ve been a talking point at the time I’m sure.

It was 1989, I think the digital speedo was standard but my memory is hazy for many reasons..

Iirc 1984 mk.2 GTE had the digital speedo/dash and it was a big talking/advertising point. It didn't make it into the 1991 mk.3 GSI that replaced it, not sure if it made it through interim facelifts.

Ah that proves it made it into the facelift then. What a stunning example!

Five of us, mostly school age, travelling in a Mk2 Escort van and pooling our funds to put 19p (I jest not) worth of fuel in - it got us nearly home, but not up the long steep final stretch. Twice we ran out of fuel half way up (we tried fast and slow).
On the third occasion we reversed the van all the way home - the fuel pickup was obviously at the front. Job sorted

ah, I was at uni in the 80s, there wasnt even work for people who needed it, let along students! I started uni in 1982, mid recession with over 3 million unemployed....

ETA 22% inflation and 15% unemployment in parts of the North, 20% in Northern Ireland. Those were the days - stagflation!

I was thinking that recently. Used to feel like a very regular job.

If you mean having an aftermarket exhaust fitted then I've done it on 3 of the last 4 cars I've owned...

MPE and a custom mid pipe on an m140i
MPPSK on a 340i
X pipe on my Mustang GT

Garage List
Joined the M8 in Glasgow, reached the end of the M1/start of the North Circular in 4 hours and 5 minutes with one stop for petrol only; - in 1975 in a 1.6 JPS Capri.

Nowadays it takes me nearly as long to go to Glossop on the outskirts of Manchester, and my car is way quicker than the JPS.

It is for me on the Caterham - I have 3 to choose from, and 3 engine maps to match.

From (relatively) quiet, to very noisy with flames!

Once drove the Headpostmasters Carlton 2.0CD back from Lancaster to Preston, might have briefly seen 125 on the speedo back in the mid 80's, would've been not long after I got my licence, paid for and taught how to drive in less than 2 weeks by The Post Office, I miss those days!!

Don't think many cars have SS exhaust systems as standard, maybe a better quality mild steel Vs the past.
