F30 spare tire solution

for those who have non run flat tires this is a must, for others just a piece of mind.

here is what the spare looks like and process to building it:

1) bmw E60 spare tire rim- $60
2) kuhmo 135/90/17 tire - $30
3) harbor freight scissor jack - $20
4) 15mm spacer + 5 45mm lugs - $50 - this is what i am selling

$160 total - compare to fully built one for f30 for $450

i tested it on both front and rear wheels and is a great solution, clears M sport brakes and M performance brakes

1. For the spare rim:

http://www.getbmwparts.com/parts/201...=Spare%20wheel

If the link doesn't work, go to list of parts for 2010 535 and then
FRONT SUSPENSION / WHEELS / WHEELS / Spare wheel

2. For the tire, you need 135/90/17. I don't think they have this size tires posted on their website, but you can call them and get the quote. I think the cheapest one they have is around $60-70.

4.For the spacers - i bought a pair, you can save half and get my second half

spare is easily stored in the trunk and secured, does not add significant weight but definitely gives a piece of mind while driving

Any other questions let me know

Stupid question: is there a space for the spare? Will the performance gain compensate for the extra weight?

Whoaw, cool!
So whatever the size of the other tyres, the whole wheel size stays the same, right?
Si you can use your 17'' spare wheel among 3 other 19'' for a short distance...

Can you make a picture of where you put the jack, spare tyre, etc.?

Thx

Works, unless you've the 18" M Sport Brakes or M Performance Brakes...
Wonder if there is a spare wheel option for that setup too?
EDIT: Ups, just read you tested on that setup?! Does that really work? I'm surprised.
EDIT: Ups, just read again. Together with the 15mm spacer it will clear 18" M Sportbrakes.
To much cross-reading

Is a can of fix a flat an option??

Seems more convenient and will probably be sufficient for the vast majority of flat tire issues.

Not sure about performance to weight gain but ride quality and thread life is definitely better of non rft tires

There is more than enough space in the trunk, jack and wrench fit nicely in the compartment under the trunk cover

Yes works great clears all bmw oem brakes

Pic of the trunk placement attached

Can won't help much heavy car and is very short term

Yes it's a great solution to get home and then to a tire shop

Can you confirm that the HF scissor jack fits the F30? I read about it fitting the E90, but wanted to make sure before I plunked down the whopping $20 for it. Last piece I need (already have a compressor and plug kit). TIA!

yes, and really any jack for a mid size sedan will work. fitting is pretty universal

No, I didn't that was my question... so with M Sport Brakes (2NH) you can go under 18' wheels, is that what you mean?

So if you have to pick up your best buddy and his wife ( who has a suitcase for shoes) and another for her other things; do you leave the tire behind or her suitcases?

Better off with non run flats and AAA to get your car towed than using your trunk for a spare.

I have two questions...

What size are your original tires?

Why are you running a 15mm spacer?

Shouldn't the spare fit without the spacer?

to clear M-sport brakes (since this is 17" spare)

space is a bit of a tradeoff but run flats are expensive and little thread life

You might end up waiting for HOURS for a tow truck to show up plus run a risk of scratching/messing up your car (these guys don't know what they're doing).

Indeed but these days what are the chances of a tyre being so badly damaged that a can of tyre weld won't get you home or to a garage?

In 12 years of driving and over 100,000 miles I have had two flat tyres, neither of which needed a spare - one was a slow overnighter I discovered before setting off, and one mid-journey that tyre weld would've sorted. If I'm representative of the average then I'm happy to take the risk of needing a tow truck once in 10-20 years for the sake of saving a fortune in tyres and having a usable and clean boot space.

In fact, even with a spare tyre people often need to call out a mechanic as wheels often get rusted into place - how many of us carry a soft headed mallet around or make sure suitable lube is applied to every wheel to prevent seizure?

Or you could just do what I do and use the E9X M3's tire inflation kit. Sure, it won't help with a blow-out, but for your basic flat tire it is extremely efficient.

Where do you get the E9X tire inflation kit?
