What is this wire?

I was changing the door handle to my 2013 328i and when i was watching a how to video, the guy said this cable was to the ambient light. My car has the M sport package but I have never had ambient lighting on my door trims. This cable connects to a clear plastic piece that is directly behind the door trim. I thought the ambient light was only added after the LCI update.

Could anyone tell me what this is for? Is there a way to activate the ambient lighting in my car if that is what it is?

The ambient light is really dim. You might have it and you just never realized it. That definitely looks like the light strip.

It's the ambient light package. Option S563.

Available on the entire F3x series. Not just the LCI.

If your car has that option, it has the lighting.

If not, it doesn't.

Technically, the light is in the grey plastic part. It's transmitted via clear tube under the trim piece. You can see the clear tube coming out of the grey piece and going through the door piece to the other side of the car where it fits under the long (usually black, chrome or beige) trim piece.

The wire connects to the LED in the gray piece, which sends light through the clear plastic tube attached to it. Since there are three wires you probably have the two color option. The LEDs are notoriously dim, especially in older model years.

IIRC "sport" lighting turns off the ambient lighting. Had to put mine to "normal" or whatever the default is to get the ambient strips to light up.

So i have the interior lighting menu on my idrive. Does everyone have that as well or would you only have that if you have the ambient light option? Ive had this car for year for 3 years and never noticed this lmao

Isn't the case that all models have the door trim lighting (what that wire connects to), and the ambient lighting allowed for the ability to change colors? I think my ambient lighting is just red or white.

I just did what deviantspeed said and the lights turned on. I guess having it in sport had them turned off. Once i switched it to classic the white light came on, then i switched it to sport again and the orange lights came on.

Im 10x more hyped about my car now lol! Wooooo!

Awesome!

And we have lights in the rear doors, unlike a special vw that only does the front!

My 2013 car was so dim you hardly noticed them even when turned on full. My 2015 is brighter.

When you take off you door card always remember not to yank it off, you can easily snap the clear plastic lighting tubing. I did this on my 2013 but it was so dim, it didn't make a difference.

The sport setting has nothing to do with it, you need to have your headlights set to Auto and they will work
