Buying 2nd (weekend) car

So I think I’ve decided to keep my 335D as its only just over 2 years old (and done a huge amount of depreciation ) and supplement with a manual petrol weekend car, maybe 2 seater ? Or JCW etc.

Just curious what you guys would do. Seen two cars, one higher mileage (40K) and at £15K , some history , but I Think its pretty genuine, other lower mileage (20K) , more history at £20K. Toying between the two, get the lower cost one and I’ve 5K in bank in case of issues etc.

Always liked low miles / low owners etc. but now wondering if its a big deal for this level.

Just interested in what various people would do.

Cheers

Rob

Why can't you use the 335d at the weekends?

Go higher mileage, lower price. If you’re only using it as a weekend toy the mileage will even out for the age when you come to sell it.

It's fairly one dimensional. Point, squirt, repeat. Might as well have an Audi.

A Mini Cooper S or an Audi TT perhaps? It's a thought that's crossed my mind.

^ This, whilst I do love the 335D and what it does, I’m craving something a bit different.
Was looking at trading it in for M3 / M4 even RS3 etc. But seems a lot of cash on top of the car.

Surely having just an M4 would be cheaper than a 335d plus a weekend car?

Not sure it would to be honest. Especially with the high tax etc. for new car and depreciation of it. Not sure I’d want an M4 as daily driver too.
Been my dilemma for quite a while

I’ve had a few weekend cars, 2 Honda S2000’s a Z4M Roadster to name just 3 of them, I eventually sold them because I wasn’t using them at the weekend.

Once I’d got rid I thought “I need a weekend car...”

Rinse repeat.

Not really Teaston it's just a family car not a sports car.

I'd get a Boxster of some description plenty of choice to suit most budgets

I’d have a Boxster again in a heartbeat 😔 regret selling mine. Maybe I should of listened to my wife for a change and got a cheaper car to use for work and still run the Boxster....I won’t ever admit that she was right tho!

The amount of miles you do in an M4
I think I’d find it tiresome.

It's all personal taste, but the 335d has coilovers on it, so an M4 is quite similar, though I admit I may prefer to swap the 20" CP wheels for 19s, will see how I get on. My business mileage is down these days too, with a lot more trains and planes, so a lot of my driving is for pleasure/hobby related, for which the M4 would be great.

And we've still got the company 330e for mundane, long journeys, local stuff etc.

It all makes sense in my head anyway!

What I'd say on weekend cars is that character, fun, involvement, are what's key. The Boxster nails that with being very usable, but very different from a typical DD, and a flat 6 naturally aspirated engine is thing of pure pleasure. Sounds great, with pure throttle response, and I do enjoy using the manual too. That does add a lot to the experience if you're on the open road and not in traffic.

MK2 MX5 IMO, cheap, cheerful, hilarious if you get one with a LSD and because it's so cheap you don't really need to worry about running costs etc.

I had one of these and it was probably the most fun car to drive I've ever had: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mazda-MX5...cAAOSwX5ZbCmTe

Decent (Bilstein) shocks and the LSD made it hilarious fun.

I had one as my first foray in open top motoring, I’ve owned plenty of nice, expensive and fast stuff since but nothing made me smile as much as my MX5 and yes mine had an LSD.

Quality little car as long as you can stop them from rotting

I had exactly this dilemma, so the solution was to take the train to work and use the m3 at the weekends. I would have gone down the lotus / porsche route but with the best will in the world I need space for family duties.
