Recall on 330e starter motors - what's all that about?

I recently put my 2016 330e in to the dealer for its first "Vehicle inspection".

They replaced the starter motor, saying that there was a recall for it. There was also some coding changes associated with it - possibly only in FEM_BODY, because they're the only custom changes I've lost.

Apparently it's specific to the 330e. Any idea what that's all about?

I've a 17 330e. Can you say of it was a recall specific to a certain year of car etc?
Where can you check for recalls?

https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle/2017/B...Communications

Click on: "Engine 17"
under "manufactures communications".

It the first one.

"Starter Motor"

Keep in mind this is a US Govt. site, so it might not be specific to your car.

Hi folks,

I would recommend getting this done ASAP. My starter motor broke and has damaged the gearbox and BMW are now awaiting delivery of a new gearbox to replace!

Sorry to hear that, @Glenn008. I take it that your car was built between November 2, 2015 to April 10,
2017 (from the link)?

My car was registered in April 2017. I enquired about the starter motor being replaced and I was told it wasn't one of the cars effected. I received the software updated though

How can I find out when my car was built? I purchased mine when it was a year old.

Try here:

It works for US cars. I am not sure it will work for yours.

No symptoms other than a loud rattling noise and a warning message saying "check drive train".

That's like saying, "No, I didn't notice anything except from the thick black smoke and intense heat" when the fire department asks you whether you noticed that your house was on fire. 😄

I should rephrase that... No symptoms before the event... then a loud rattling noise and the "check drivetrain" alarm notification.

Sorry for a slight thread resurrection, but I've an April 2016 330e, and this issue has now happened to me... a rattle from the bonnet as it goes from electric to combustion, then drivetrain / starter / ignition error... Has anyone got this before and was it part of a recall?

No problem. Good you resurrected it.

I think the replacement starter had been updated to a more robust version, because when it starts to fail, it will take out the flywheel and up to the transmission. I'm having mine looked at next month.

Here's a Technical Service sheet on the starter. Sound like your problem?
