It was so nice not getting stuck waiting for a tow...and I can't imagine being in the middle of nowhere without a spare. G-d forbid we should have an extra 40 lbs. in the car. smh

I'm not racing, so glad I have them around NY/NJ's potholes.
Have you thought about using Flexseal?

Ha! It works great though. I filled all the holes on my e46, filled the tires up with Helium, and was able to float across a river.

I was thinking of rtv or superglue...for about a second. I got home not having seen the hole thinking I'd plug it and was amazed at what I'd driven on.

I plugged and vulcanized a rear RFT - been like that for 4 years and zero issues.
They did take the tire off and plug it. Don't know about vulcanizing tbh. The patched area looks more like a compound+paste+rubber plug...if that makes any sense. And also balanced all 4 tires. I thought not bad for $20?

No tire shop I've been to takes the tire off. They remove the offending item, insert the plug, pull it tight and trim. They might apply glue to it to help for insertion and to secure it.

All of this is done with the tire on the car.

Garage List
Before I bought my own plug kit, my daughter's car had a flat. I put her spare on and brought the flat in to a local shop. They charged me $19. They took the tire off the wheel, plugged it and remounted the tire then balanced the wheel. This was over 2 years ago when she started driving.

Me, I just plug and go nowadays. My last flat was two years ago (on a runflat even) and the plug is still going strong. I'm probably going to get new tires soon.
When her tires wear, I'm getting her run flats.

I'm hoping the plug stays! $20 is much better than $200 per tire 😁

Patch/plug is generally required here in the States. They just need to break the bead near the puncture to gain access for the repair.

I'm not aware of any requirement for patch plugs. Back in the days before steel belts we used what we called mushroom plugs like these: https://www.amazon.com/Stop-Go-3075-...01AWHTBA&psc=1
The gun that we used had a barrel about 1/4 inch diameter, which you could insert through bias ply tires, made easier because the plugs were soaked with glue that acted as a lubricant, but when steel belted radials came along you couldn't insert them. Now I use a Dynaplug kit, which has a much smaller diameter for pushing it through steel belts.

That is just viewed as a temporary/emergency repair here in the UK. A patch/plug inserted from the inside, after an inspection of the sidewall condition, is the approved repair.

My temporary/emergency repairs are three and four years old.

Regulations really should not be written by those who have no clue.
