Unhappy F30 Mirror Replacement

Hi all, new here so hope i’m posting the correct place. I have a 2017 plate 330e m sport (Right hand drive).

Anyway, so last week my driver’s side mirror came to an untimely end as it was knocked off by a cyclist, completely his fault, but of course cyclists don’t have insurance. I’m loathed to claim on my insurance for it, so thought I would bite the bullet and pay for the repair. Had a quote of £480 from a local garage for parts only!!!! So was thinking of buying a second hand one off eBay instead for £130 ish. The actual fitting of it and removing the door card etc doesn’t seem too difficult looking at YouTube.

I have a couple of questions though, there appears to be mirrors available with 5 or 6 pins for f30s. I’m not sure which I need, my mirrors are not the automatic folding ones, I believe I need the 6 pin one, but haven’t dismantled the other mirror to double check. Any ideas what the difference is? I'm guessing the mirrors on ebay are from older cars, which I hope are still compatible?

Secondly i’ve read about people having problems with their door electrics after changing to an older or newer mirror. Is there any fancy coding required to make it all work properly. I’m hoping to just replace like for like so hoping it’s just plug and play, but anybody know for certain before I buy a 2nd hand mirror? Anything that involves coding will be way beyond my capability.

Thanks in advance.

Dave

What part of the old mirror broke? Have you got photos of it?

It's currently held on with tape, I could pull it off to take photos this evening, but haven't got any to hand at the minute. The turning mechanism sheered apart, leaving the mirror hanging on by the electric cable. The electric functions all still work. Everything else is still intact.

Given how much force applied to do this, what sort of injuries did the cyclist receive?

I'm also curious how a cyclist broke the mirror, given they don't fold back you'd expect the cyclist to have been knocked off.

In terms of the mirror, your best bet is to pop the glass out, remove the torx screws and check the wire / part number on the glass.

Assuming the housing is still fine it should be a simple like for like replacement, if the housing is find then it's just pop glass out, undo some torx screws, gently remove the painted cap (if that's damaged).

They do fold back. They fold in to the car and out to the wing, the latter I use often after washing to get all the water out the mirror so it doesn't run down the door.

Probably crunched his handlebars into it, same height?

Just tried to move mine towards the wing and doesn't move, gave it quite a bit of force too. Keen to see pictures of damage though

Would have turned the bike into the vehicle with the rider then crashing into the wing and bonnet. Probably more damage than a snapped mirror and probably hospitalised cyclist

You would have thought so but that happend to me with a tosspot despatch rider on a motorbike on Edgware Road. I was stationary in queuing traffic and he rode in between cars and broke my mirror clean off by pushing it towards the wing. He didn't come off the lucky cunt.

Yes but the principle is the same ergo the force to snatch the handlebars out of the rider's hands or twist the steering. I was hoping he would have come off.

It was too quick unfortunately. I was looking towards the nearside and there was a loud crack and he was virtually gone by the time I realised what happened.

Whilst the principle is the same it would take much more force to deflect 150Kg + rider weight than it would a pushbike

So as long as you buy a mirror with that part intact you can swap any needed bits from your old mirror onto it, including wiring.

He was a cyclist, not a motorbike, a teenager. I was travelling approximately 10mph (in electric mode, so silent) approaching a junction which I was going to turn off at. He was going fast, guess at 20mph, after travelling down a path that was perpendicular to the road, went behind a parked 4x4, and came straight out across the road without stopping or looking, he said he didn't look and couldn't see, but thought it was ok as he couldn't hear a car. He hit my passenger front wing, bike and cyclist came up over the bonnet and he landed in a sitting position on my drivers wing mirror taking it off. He was completely uninjured not even a scratch or bruise, I have lots of scratches on the car from the bike spinning over it and obviously the mirror was the main problem. Luckily a car travelling down the road behind me stopped and immediately offered to be my witness.

The painted "cap", and everything is fine, its just the main steel movement mechanism that has snapped, but I think that means I need to replace the whole unit pretty much.

I'll take it apart tonight and find the part number, and also take some photos. I'll need to go and buy some more tape to stick it back on with in the mean time though.

What a ball ache for you.

I replaced my drivers side mirror indicator last night after a doddery old bloke hit the mirror in a country lane a couple of months ago (I was pulled over stationary).

One word of warning, remove the glass with care, once's that's out it's easy to take apart, but if feels like you're going to break it, use some trim removal tools if you have them and take your time.

Hope you get it sorted anyway.

I will be replacing my mirrors with folding ones in a few weeks, so if my old ones are any good just let me know.

I have switched mirrors with eBay supplied mirrors.

No coding needed.

Actually pretty easy.

A)Remove interior door handle

B)Remove Door Panel (and tweeter if there)

C)Unscrew 3 volts iirc and it comes right off.

D)Simply unplug and replace

E)Reverse steps to install and close up

1) What part of your mirror is broken and needs replacing (see below).

2) Do you have M or Shadowline option?

3) Glass Mirror broken?

4) Color (or is the mirror cap [part 4] broken)?

5) Heated?

6) Autodim?

7) Lane Change Warning?

8) Camera/Surround view?

9) Memory position?

This sounds as you might only need part #1

If so, still need items 2-9 answered.

Hi IK6SPEED.

1. Yes, just section 1. broken.
2. M sport, they have the gloss black bottom section and coloured top section.
3. Glass intact
4. Coloured part intact, Estoril blue.
5. Yes, believe they are heated (not had the car long enough to have needed the heat)
6. Don’t know. May have to check the manual.
7. No, doesn’t have lane change warning.
8. No camera.
9. Memory position? No idea what this even is. My general knowledge about wing mirrors isn’t up to this kind of scrutiny. Lol
