2015 335i Engine Rattling Noise
Now before i get into this. Let me say i have done extensive research of the notorious “rattling” noise these cars have. Let me just state that my specific issue is not as loud as the countless wastegate rattles that come from the back exhaust.
Now to begin, my specific issue is that sometimes when i am lightly accelerating, there is a faint rattling noise around 1.5k rpm comming from what seems to be the driver side engine bay. It is also apparent when deceleration and goes away when car is parked and being revved. It is only obvious when its really quiet or there is a wall nearby to reflect the sound which makes it more apparent. My car is a 2015, and has the upgraded tube balancer which there was a service bulletin for older models, so that rules out that problem. Let me state that my car is completely stock, with no mods or tune. I cant tell what it is. I still have limited cpo warranty and have made an appointment but was trying to check the geniuses on the forum first before anything. The only reason im starting a new thread is because i havent found any proven fix for this specific type of rattling issue. What could it possibly be? Could be your tensioner I had the same thing at only 800-1500 rpm then gone. Only heard it in drive the us or when next to something to bounce the sound back. I also have videos posted on here. If it sounds similar it's the same thing.
Was covered under cpo for me as I took it in for a few other things before it ended Otherwise I think you can fix it yourself for $30~ in parts and some simple tools. |

I vote belt tensioner. How many miles? If you swap the tensioner, I think it's also recommended to also replace the serpentine belt and idler pulley.

I got the dealer to replace the belt tensioner after 4 visits. Mine was making whining and rattling noises. Now that the tensioner is new whining still lives on but the rattling is gone. 2017 F32 B58 engine
jh_f30 -- Why do you think the serpentine belt and idler pulley needs replacement? Just asking as a newbie.. |

sorry for the late reply, but it seemed to not be my belt tensioner the dealership said that its not making any weird noises and i dont notice anything wrong with that either. Im pretty sure that it is my turbo wastegate. Not sure how i can go about getting this fixed under cpo. some guys had their whole turbos replaced but i dont have a check engine. Any ideas?

My 2013 f30 335i (pneumatic waste-gate) has started to make this "ticking" or "rattling" noise upon startup. It also has started making a "metallic rattling" or "metallic vibrating" noise when accelerating from a stop.
I've attached videos where you can hear the rattling upon startup and another one where you can CLEARLY hear the metallic vibration at 2k-3k rpm's when accelerating. PLEASE ADVISE if you have any ideas of what this might be. 1. Vibration/Rattling at 2k-3k RPMS when accelerating from stop: https://youtube.com/shorts/MeKYDv978a8?feature=share 2. Rattling/Clicking/Chugging noise when idling after startup: https://youtube.com/shorts/FxnBuPyQwrY?feature=share |

The grease around the bearings of the idler pulley can dry out. It sounds worse if dust gets in there as well.
