Leaky valve cover gasket is usually the reason, but you're car is so new I'd find it hard to believe.

Your car only has one cylinder head...it's an inline six, not a V6.

My 340 had the same issue at about 4500 miles. Turned out the turbo was leaking oil so they had to replace it

Curious, could see the oil leak?

Just did a little test today and the smell come under heavy acceleration when the motor is hot with the sun roof open (yea that sounds crazy)... Sun roof closed its still there but not as bad..

Nonetheless its slight when going slower... but heavy under hard acceleration..

There weren't any no oil marks on the garage floor or anything like that. Car was on a lift and turbo was visibly leaking

I would look around for any oil leaks and also check the oil using i drive. If it isn't burning oil it may be fine but you can have it checked out. It may just be breaking in and the gaskets need to expand or something which may be causing the smell, just my guess though. If you're concerned have them look at it but they may tell you there isn't a problem unless there are codes in the ECU.

All new cars smell funny to me. I just figure it's part of the break in period. It'll go away.

If you are sure the smell is oil you are leaking from someplace. Does not take much to create a smell. Might never hit the floor if its small & burns off. Look for oil traces on the engine.

Being that new I would bring it in. If it's a turbo or VCG it needs to be fixed.

Just went in the dealer for an unrelated issue, and the service tech mentioned he smelled burning oil, ended up changing the head gasket under warranty.

Want to report back

As I expected they could not reproduce the issue and have found no evidence of leaks. I will admit it has become harder to reproduce the issue since the cooler weather came in. Even yesterday it was raining and no matter how much I beat on the car I couldn't reproduce the smell...

Lets see now that some warmer weather has come in.

I found an old thread where many have complained about the same smell - it may be par for the course for this PoS - like the rattling on the passenger seat and the Apple Car play locking up.

BMW really has quality issues compared to other brands... Probably my last one.

If the smell comes in when you have the sunroof vented or open, I have it in my 435 too. It's the grease and the gaskets around the sunroof and it blows into the cabin when it's open. After a year, it's hardly noticeable though. If it smells in the cabin when the sunroof is closed, that's definitely a problem. Outside, all new cars have strange smells as stuff burns off.

You should probably sell that POS though and cut your loses as soon as possible, it sounds like a nightmare.

Thats interesting because I most notice it when the sunroof is open. I will have to take a sniff and see if its the sun roof. I have not smelled anything outside the car.

This is my 5th BMW X3, X5, 325 coupe, 335 now 440gc (mppsk).. Every single one has had some issues. Meanwhile all other brands of cars I cant even think of a single issue I have had outside wear and tear.

The 440 has annoying issues and still love the car.. Just very frustrating at this point. You think I would have learned when my 335 left me stranded due to a faulty fuel pump... but just love the 440 lol

I will report back on the smell..

Mine is definitely the sunroof, the tech even found it. It's like the smell of the "hidden key" in your fob but 2000x stronger and stinkier (smell your key, it's disgusting and what's funnier is I had everybody in the dealership smelling theirs -they all stink -greasy stink). It's way better a year later.

I hope your love/hate can turn to just love, but if it doesn't, open your mind and wallet to a different brand when you can't stand it anymore. At the end of the day, it's really just a car, don't let it make you crazy.
