To get the wheel to the state it's in on the pictures will take about 10 minutes if you've not done it before. Half that after you've done it once!
Yes, the airbag needs to be taken off - you can just hold it away, no need to disconnect.
Then its a single screw to get the trim off. Paddles stay where they are.

On the main heated steering wheel retrofit thread there is a part where you may need to add some extra wires to the rotary contacts (SZL???) This will need extra work. But I'd assume that if the wheel has vibes, then the heat wires should be in there.

I've already paid for the parts from BMW and paid to have the parts installed as well as paid again to have it remote coded to no avail. What was a "simple" project is already $500 bucks to this point. I think without knowing whether the heating element is inside it isn't worth it to keep paying to find out more.

This was probably always a project for handy DIYer and not for a total novice like myself.

So, I purchased the heated steering wheel switch (complete with cable) and the lower steering column trim panel to house the switch for £97 (brand new from BMW). A bit of VO coding later and I have a working heated steering wheel............winner

Anyone check their older M style wheel to see if the heating function is in a similar location. I have a 2016 X4 M sport with all the lane goodies but didn't come with heated seats or steering wheel.

Remove the trims - compare what you have with the pictures on page 2 of this thread.

Slight thread resurrection....

A couple of the posts on this thread show the dash message 'Steering wheel heating activated'. Is this a feature on LCI vehicles? I get no such message on my car, of course the button lights up but given it takes a while to cool down on occasion I forget if I've turned it off or not and the only way to tell is to peer around the steering column.

The car was fitted with heated wheel from factory, I've not touched anything. Just curious if I should see that message when activated as my car was built March 2014.

TIA

Has anyone done this to a base/sportline wheel? If yes, can you share the part numbers for the steering column trim piece and heated wheel button? TIA

I queried this on another group, apparently it may have something to do with the instrument cluster fitted to my car. Word is the cluster needs to have digital fuel gauge among other options for this to show up.

I'll have a dig around in bimmercode. I don't recall seeing anything but maybe it something you can do in the advanced coding... in which case I'll leave it well alone!

From additional Googling, it appears the part numbers are the same for M-Sport, Base, and Sportline wheels

There are two buttons.
The later one has a chrome trim, the earlier one is all black.
I bought the later (chrome) one as it was the correct part for my LCi - wish I'd gone with all black, although you can't see it from the drivers seat!

I understand, the accidental addition of anything chrome or shiny silver makes me shiver too.

This thread is excellent, I didn't even consider this was a possibility but decided to have a look after my dad bought a G20 recently and I was envious of the heated steering wheel in the recent cold weather lol. I've got a 2014 F36 with LDW and just took off my airbag to take a look. Please could someone let me know if I have the correct wiring for the heating element as I think I do but I'm not 100% sure which one it is? Many thanks! Zain

It looks to me like you have the control module for both heating and vibrate.

If you look here I posted a picture showing the module I used connected to the wheel for heating. It looks similar to yours.
