B48 320i with modified 340i muffler ("PE mod")

Hello,

After going back and forth on an (affordable) exhaust system for my B48 320i (running BM3 stage 1), I am considering doing what Jadar did to his stock 335i exhaust but using a 340i system see link: https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=819125

I have found a 340i stock catback system for a very good price, I was thinking of purchasing this and then modifying the muffler as Jadar did in the above post i.e. opening up the muffler and spot welding the pipe perforations in chamber 1 and chamber 2; then fit the whole Catback system into my 320i.

I know 335i is a completely different animal, but surely I will still see positive results by doing this?

Has anyone else done anything similar? What are your thoughts, and any advice?

After doing a bit of reading, i have another query.... changing the piping from 2.5inch (in 320i system) to 3inch (in 340i) will result in a reduction in back pressure - will this have any negative impact on torque or power or even turbo longevity? There seem to be a lot of mixed views

go to a local muffler shop, tell them what you want to achieve.

I did mine for only 380$ and it sounds super mean with pops and bangs.

Nice! I was thinking of doing a muffler delete initially, but don't want drone
From what I read with regards to modifying the muffler (see link in original post) - I would end up with a better sound tone and it will not drone, hence why I am leaning towards it

it depends on your muffler shop, my mechanic tried 3 different exhaust setups

3rd one was a charm without that annoying drone sound.

either way you could just use bootmod3 and configure the sound exactly as you like.

I am looking into that too, cause i want the burbles to last a bit longer in my vehicle.

Both set ups sound very good.
But I don't want anything too loud and want to keep is kind of stock- slightly louder with burbles on overrun, hence why I am going for a modified 340i exhaust

there is no point. Honestly, the n20/n26 is very quiet. I recently did a 335i muffler conversion on my 328i (n20). Even with the stock downpipe and resonator with no muffler, it was really really quiet. Just go no muffler and save yourself the trouble.

I went stock as I wanted an oem+ look without installing a DP or removing the resonator for when both tips are open.

I would go catless, but holding off due to emissions and issues with smell - may be something for the future. Right now, just want something close to a M Performance exhaust....but taking this route as MPE is a bit to dear for me at the moment

I have the B48 engine - which is known to be louder than the n20/n26 anyways. And, I am not after anything too loud, just want a bit more sound. Muffler delete may be a but too much; also don't want the issue with drone - hence why I am taking this route

use electronic valve control on the exhaust like mine
when you want silent mode, just press off from the remote control
when you want race card sound, just press on from the remote control
very easy and simple

example are like armytrix exhaust system

i have the b48 too, did a muffler delete, no drone issue.

With the stock piping and nothing else straight pipe after the resonator this car is rather quiet. My old nissans would be the loudest cars on the block if i took of the muffler. It almost reminds me of just a slightly louder apexi ws2 in terms of loudness.
