Touch Up Advice Please

Edit: sorry for posting in wrong section guys.

Walked around my car today and noticed a rock hit the bonnet square on the edge just above the right headlight and penetrated all layers. Not only that but it kind of cracked the surrounding clear coat. How should I correct this? Simple Dr. Colorchip enough or will more be necessary?

Simple touch up might work, but there's no guarantee that it'll get under the peeled clear coat and fill/seal it completely. Any contaminants or air bubbles inside could just get trapped and might grow into a bigger problem.

Idk how a pro would do it, but my guess is it would involve some sanding. I guess it just comes down to how "perfect" you want it to be. I have a ton of rock chips and some spots that lifted the clear on my front end. It's my daily and has over 130k miles, so I'm not that worried about it being pristine.

Just realized I posted in the wrong section — sorry about that everyone.

Anyway, that’s my main concern is the clear coat lifting more and creating an even larger problem. This is my DD as well, but with 32k miles on it. I’ll wait for more to chime in and I’ll also reach out to a shop. Thank you!

That was one nasty rock!
I think you were lucky, bcs that nasty rock could crack the headlight.

My car has 225.000 kilometers and I've got only small rock chips, only few bigger ones, but non of them is close to this size like yours.

It's best to remove the cracked/loose clear coat & paint before you touch up with color & clear.

what i would do is get a few regular pencils. cut out tiny sandpaper circles, glue it to the eraser tip and twirl the pencil back and forth to sand the damaged clear. then touch up as necessary.

maybe 320 and progress up to 1200 or finer.
