All right... finally got this sorted out. Apparently I cannot read and the OP's 4-series link doesn't work on a 3-series. Plug is the same, wiring is slightly different, so you end up with no change from OEM.

You can get those GTS taillights for true dynamic, but they are a bit expensive.
