Adding M1/M2 buttons?

I have a 340i MSPORT without Active Crouse Control which means I have two empty “buttons” on my steering wheel where the ACC buttons would be. I would like to buy the F80 M3 steering wheel controls that have the M1 and M2 button and install it in my car.

I’m assuming the buttons would send out M1/ M2 CAN messages that that car would ignore since I don’t have the M3.

Is there a device that will receive one CAN message and retransmit a different CAN message?

I’m thinking if there was a device that would see the M1/M2 CAN messages then retransmit another message, I could install the BMW M3 steering wheel controls and use those buttons for whatever I want. I my case I was thinking about using them to mimic the SPORT/ECO buttons.

I have the F80 steering wheel in my F30.

I have the buttons as well, not installed though. I swapped the original buttons from my F30 m sport steering wheel before installing the F80 wheel.

I was going to test and see what happens if I install them. There is a way to code m button config into the cic (and NBT i guess) even if you dont have an M3/4.

If I ever get around to this I will let you know my results. If you find a way to get some sort of emulator to relay the eco / sport please let me know!

I wanted to do the same as you BTW, except comfort and sport.

I installed a m5 steering wheel on a 750LI and the m1 and m2 buttons do not work, did you happen to figure out how to code them with e-sys to sport or sport+ mode?

Have you tried to code Comfort-Sport?

Would the buttons fit regardless of coding them to work properly? Taking the wheel apart, removing the blank place holders/button fillers and then installing the red M1/M2 buttons? I know it might sound lame to install them and not have them be functional, but I love the little splash of red that goes with the start/stop button. Just curious is they would install, not function?

Is there anyway adding these buttons can be made to control the exhaust valves? I have mppsk and it would be cool to control the valves from the M1 and M2 buttons.

yes, youd have to modify it though since its currently set up with the circuit needed for controlling the drive modes, but with the proper hardware you could have those buttons control anything, it just comes down to understanding how the flap is controlled currently

Planning to order a kit. Do the buttons illuminate at night?

Also, can the blank buttons be modified to move? I like the functionality but don't want red/blue buttons.

I can vouch for this guy. Ordered a kit 2 weeks ago and came in just a few days. Install was painless and working great!

Is it gonna be a matte black like M4? or shiny like those red/blue buttons?

Must admit the buttons are more than just a gimmick as some presumed, I find them pretty useful.

I installed a set back in 2020 when a guy in the UK prototyped them before all the aliexpress sellers began shipping them last year: https://streamable.com/39rvtn

Controlling the oem exhaust valve is actually super simple as the CAN wire can easily be refunctioned using the open trigger which occurs when switching into sports mode. However as I have an aftermarket oem style valve I created separate buttons instead..

I'd recommend you have both if you plan of doing this, it's the best of both worlds rather than sacrificing the drive mode select on the wheel.
