REAR brakes needing replacement at 51k?
Hi all,
I took my BMW 2020 430Xi into BMW Gallery today for routine maintenance, and they told me that I need new REAR brake pads, roters and sensors. Fronts are still good. Seems strange as I only have 51k on the car. I have never had the brakes replaced before. I should note that NO warning light went on in the iDrive system. Something seems fishy here..... how could the brakes have worn this fast? The gal at the service department said that the thickness was "red". Why does this mean? Am I being taken advantage of here? |

50-60k miles seems about right for brakes especially if you do a lot of city driving.

BTW, even if we don't brake hard or excessively, rear brakes can still wear out first. |

MTTH 51K is in kilometers, that is only 31K in miles.
derek.megyesi You should not replace the brakes until the car tells you so - hence there are wear sensors. Once the sensor is triggered, there is still at least 15% of pad thickness there. Stealership is screwing with you. Unless you actively track the car or ride brakes on highway, in 99% of times the rears NEVER wear out first. Fronts are the ones that do 75% of work when stopping the car. I do highway kilometers, my rears last up to 100K kms on all my cars. Even now, my 2017 GT has 71K km and rear pads are at least at 50%. I'm still on OEM metallic pads as they were installed on the car at manufacture.

If you have doubts just get a second opinion or do it yourself. Don't ignore your brakes if someone is calling out that there's a problem, that becomes a safety issue.
It is unusual wear but not unheard of. |
