No inspection / replacement schedule on valvetrain ?
So I have 175,000+ (miles) on my 2012 F30 N55. Bought it in 2015 with 38K on it.
Nothing too unexpected has happened although the timing of part could've been better. Around 100K (forget exactly) I had both a leaking VC gasket and Oil filter housing. Did not notice the filter housing in time - it caused my car to shred the belt. Fortunately it did not ingest it through the crank seal... Due to time constraints I let an indy shop do that work. Around 120K or so the water pump went, so I changed that and the stat. Nothing else really seemed like it needed it. Started noticing the VC leak again around 160K and fixed that not too long ago. While I was at it, I did plugs, but not coils yet. Still running on most original hoses, vacuum tubes, VANOS solenoids, etc. I realize any of that could become a problem at any time. But...I've been searching and I haven't yet found anything about a valve lash check or timing set change? All my previous cars it's been necessary to at least check, if not replace, timing chain/belt around 100K ish. I figure it won't be long before I have to do another water pump and I'd probably go ahead and replace associated hoses while I'm at it. Anything else to be watching for? Car still runs like a top. Basically stock though. T |

Guess I didn't really make it clear that this was a question.
Should I be checking valve lash or looking to replace timing parts at this point? Thx. |

There is no valve adjustment, it's all hydraulic.
Hydraulic valve clearance compensation (HVCC) There is no timing belt, there is a chain. As far as I know the 335i didn't have an issue with the timing chain. If you had an N20 328i it would've probably been destroyed a long time ago.

Got it. Thanks! Won't worry about that for now then.
I do know even chains can stretch over time. I replaced my Z28's timing chain loooong before this mileage (probably around 30K since I had the front cover off anyway for a cam swap...why not?). My wife's Accord I'm due to do a valve lash check - apparently the honda K motor valves tighten up slightly over time - which is silent but leads to burnt valves. :P Really happy with the 335 overall. It still feels pretty new - but most of that mileage came from 5 years of 65mi each-way commutes. :O |
