Under the terms of the settlement, BMW will be required to reimburse consumers for the timing chain tensioner, the timing chain, engines damaged from the faulty timing chain tensioner, and vehicles sold at a loss due to issues that stemmed from the faulty timing chain tensioner. The warranty for Covered Parts was also extended for the affected models from the standard length of four years or 50,000 miles to seven years or 100,000 miles.
BMW agreed that vehicles repaired at an authorized Mini Cooper dealer will be reimbursed for the full cost of the replacement part. Parts replaced at a third party service center will only be reimbursed up to $850 for timing chains and $120 for timing chain tensioners.
BMW also agreed to pay for larger claims involving entire engines that needed to be fixed or replaced as well as vehicles sold at a loss because of the defect. As part of the agreement, BMW will pay up to $4,500 for any engine repairs and up to $2,500 for Mini Cooper owners who sold their vehicles at a loss. The exact amount for each class member will be determined by the age of the vehicle and the number of miles on it.
The final terms of the settlement guarantees all members of the class action lawsuit $4,000 on top of whatever reimbursement they get from individual claims. BMW additionally agreed to pay for plaintiff attorney fees, which could reach $2.3 million.

N54 engines had warranty extended to 120k miles/10 years for high pressure fuel pump and fuel injectors I guess.

I think 120k miles seems to be fair for known problem like that one. 70k is too low, because most people's getting whining noise after 80k miles (according to web forums)

pretty much.

The weird part from all of this, when I called the bmw corporate here, the lady I spoke to said that in the near future it was looking like the EW was going to be pushed to 120k, this was back in 2018 lol, glad I didnt hold my breath.

7 years as well. My wife 320 is 2014 model year.
Therefore from next year the warranty for time chain is gone.
This is not good at all. I wish I have a way to check the time chain and rails are giving up before the sudden issue.

Has anybody paid for the timing chain and guides to be replaced themselves? If so, how much did it cost?

I'm debating the cost of replacement versus getting a new (used) car.

My F30 only has 54K miles, so it might make financial sense to pay to get it done myself. I use the car on some long roadtrips, and I don't want to be stuck in the middle of nowhere with a car that can't be repaired.

My guess is that a shop would charge you $2k-$3k. How handy are you with a wrench? It is not a hard job - just a lot of steps - and it requires a few specialized tools. There is a complete kit out there that has all the necessary bits, including a new oil pump drive gear.

You do...

In most cases, a whine will be present prior to failure (for hundreds, if not thousands of miles).

Also, you can check timing chain for slack with engine warm (but off).

If you hear loud whining or see/feel excessive slack in chain (through oil cap)... take to dealer for thorough inspection. They have a procedure and tool to measure timing chain elongation.

I just want to share my nightmare last year

I had Stage 2 AGG, Octane 91, on my N20 F30. Had all the recommended hardware, including decat exhaust, wagner tuning front mount intercooler, FTP charge pipe, FTP boost pipe, GFB DV+, injen evolution cold air intake.

Last night, when in sport+ and driving around 160km/h on 3,5k rpm, my engine suddenly knocking, and drive train error shows up on the i drive. Scanned the error and got the following error code:

Name: F30 error.jpg
Views: 1309
Size: 895.3 KB

Bring the car to local BMW dealer, and after they tested and inspect it, my piston on cylinder 3 was cracked.

They said, because of too much power and torque, the engine's internal can't handle it.
They previously encountered more than 10-N20 engine that has the some problem because of the aggressive power and torque from remap.

The quoted me around USD 3,000 (excluding VAT) for the repair, which is huge blow to the pocket.

2014 BMW F30 320i N20 engine
36k miles (when engine blow)
oil change every 5000km
periodic maintenance at BMW Authorized Service Center
Armytrix downpipe
Straight pipe exhaust
GFB DV+
Wagner competition FMIC
FTP Charge pipe
FTP TIC
Injen evolution CAI

my N20 engine's internal:

You blowing up your own engine due to not knowing what you were doing has nothing to do with the defect in the N20 engines being discussed here.

But cool story, bro.

Of course you know I pulled the codes from the car as I was sitting on the side of the road with the blown engine... These are the codes the car threw after the chain went bad.

Well I guess this means there is a very slim chance that things could be settled before my extended coverage expires on 7/31

I recently replaced my E90 2009 by a F30 2017, also CPO. The B48 engine does well for this car.
