I drive 5 update

Hi

Just wondering if anyone knew if BMW will push an update to existing idrive 5 owners to bring in the new 'active tile' design that's been shown on all the latest 4series LCI info? Would be pretty frustrating if the current version becomes out dated after just 6 months of existence!

Probably not.

Like you, I have missed out on ID5 by a month, even though the hardware is the same (except for the ATM, communications module), no official update from BMW is available.

I can most definitely assure you this will be the case for ID5->ID6

Ahh I've actually got Idrive 5, but the latest images of the new LCI releases look slightly different; rather than have all 6 tiles on one screen it looks like the new version has two screens of 3 tiles? Hopefully it should just be an update?

There is ID5, ID6 lite, and ID6. OTA or otherwise updates will not be pushed. Can be done through E-sys.

Here's what we have done so far with varying degrees of success. Please note that we strongly do not recommend flashing your ID4 NBT EVO unit to ID5 as it is a one way street and you it is not possible to return to ID4 which will cause warranty implications. All of our ID4 units were flashed on a bench using donor units.

ID4 NBT EVO HW2.3 ECE Version (Flashed to 59.4 ID5.0, FDL coded to ID6: Installed onto 2016 328i xDrive)

Fully working minus Telematics. GPS will not work via ATM module, GPS is using external antenna.

ID4 NBT EVO HW2.1 NA Version (Flashed to 59.4 ID5.0, FDL Coded to ID6:

Cannot code Navigation. CarPlay, Voice Control, Satellite Radio all work.

ID5 NBT EVO NA Version (Native ID5.0, FDL coded to ID6) 2017 F25 X3 28i NA Spec

I believe in the 4 series refresh they just snowed that it is getting idrive 5. After that is released I'm hopeful there will be some more ease to port that over to the 3 series.

According to the pictures from the unveiling, it is iDrive 6.0 which can easily be coded if the vehicle is on iDrive 5.0.

You have NBT1 ID4, one of the very early builds since yours is a Active Hybrid 3.

Awesome, thank you both. One more stupid question since I keep finding conflicting information. Is an upgrade to ID5 possible with a flash from Esys? I'm planning on doing a full update to all the ECUs this weekend and figure this would be a good time to look into it.

ID5 and ID6 require HU_NBT2 (AKA HU_NBT_EVO). It is not possible to flash ID5 onto any other hardware (eg, HU_NBT). It is more involved than just flashing all ECU's as different FSC set is needed.

I heard that NBT_EVO units with ID5+ have 2GB RAM where early EVO hardware had 1GB RAM.

Possibly one of the others who have dug into this more deeply can confirm/deny.

Yep, I have tested this one several vehicles and it does work as long your ID5 build is from July 2016 onwards.

Does this give me any more options or will i loose some options when doing this? Or is this simply just the GUI?

It pretty much just changes the home screen with the tiles showing a live preview of each menu option. Everything else is the same.

If you have HU_NBT2, you have correct hardware. But, ID4+ and ID5/ID6 are different firmware as well as FSC codes. Therefore, you cannot simply switch to the ladder through coding alone.

If the difference between ID5 and ID6 is only the home screen...but the hardware is the same... I don't understand why BMW doesn't update ID5 cars to ID6 when upgrading the I-Level at the dealers....

If you have ID5 from factory....upgrading to ID6 is only a matter of changing an option on e-sys and all will work? All BMW Online, eCall, ConnectedDrive Services etc will continue to work?

Thanks.

ID5 is meant for G12. ID6 is meant for smaller screen. Dealership does not have E-sys.
