N20/N26 oil alternatives to 0w-20...
Hello guys,
As most of us know. BMW is now recommending a LL-14 0w-20 weight oil for their 4 cylinder engine cars. I understand this is mostly done to improve fuel economy. But still I feel it is a really lightweight oil. Especially for cars in warm climates and in the summer. Would it be a bad idea to experiment running a 0w-30 or 5w-30 alternative during the summer months? I use to always run a LL-01 Castrol 5w-30 Euro blend in all my previous BMWs and I would love use this in my N20. However, I worry it is too much of a viscosity difference from the recommended 0w-20 currently in my car. Any of you guys have any experience moving up from BMWs 0w-20 oils? |

Im on my second N20 powered F30 and Ive been running 0w40 in both, every 5k miles... with great success.
Castrol or Mobil 1 2014 328i w/ N26 2016 320i w/ N20 |

It's only one step from 0w-20 to 5w-30, which is insignificant. There's no reason why you can't continue using it. The N20/26 didn't change. The recommendation for 0w-20 as you noted was done purely to realize higher gas mileage without any changes to the engines. They did it after there was enough real world experience with the N20/N26 to suggest that it wouldn't affect the long term reliability of the engines, the timing chain problem notwithstanding, as that doesn't seem to be oil related. As for 0w versus 5w, I run 5w all year long, even in below zero temperatures. If I lived in Socal I'd probably use a 10w.

Other day, I was tempted to purchase Kirkland Signature 0W-20 Full Synthetic Motor Oil 5-quart, 2-pack jug for $24.29
You guys think good deal? Costco also sell 5W-30 for the same price. Saw on the box it is manufactured by Warren Distribution Inc. |

I tried a couple different oils from Mobil 1 to Liqumoly and others. My n20 seemed happiest with Castrol 0w40 euro blend but blackstone reports for all oils at 5k intervals looked good. I burned the most oil with Liquimoly .5L over 5k miles and more like .2L or so with others. Still within spec but just something to note is all.

The key is the oil change interval.... some might say 5000-7000 miles and some will say 10k miles. Choose your poison
I use to drive 80% highway miles on my commute... I guess you can push 10k on this but I'm still doing 7k.... sspade do 5k interval. You can feel for on your driving routine. Last edited by Gen13 F36; 08-08-2020 at 11:38 AM.. |

It's interesting how BMW was running a 30 weight oil in the N20 all the way up until 2016. Then switching to a 20 weight without any change to the engine...
I know the BMW engineers really know what they are doing but a 20 weight oil just seems much too thin. I think a 40 weight will be too much. I just try my best to not stray away from BMWs recommendations. I think a 5w-30 LL01 Castrol Edge might be the right choice for an all around oil. Close enough too spec but won't cause any harm to the engine. |

I run Liquimoly 0W-40, changed every 5k miles. You won't have any problems running 5W-30, 0W-30 or 0W-40.

I have a 2017 N20 F25 X3 sDrive28i, but all the engines are the same. In the photo, blue is recommended (0W20), but there are other options. I choose anything that meets LL01. I just removed the dealer 0W20 fill from our CPO and put in LiquiMoly 5W30 Special Tec.
I use Castrol Edge 0W40 (or 5W40) in my E39, but they lost the LL01 certs somewhat recenetly. I'm sure it's fine, but for our X3, I would rather stick with something that holds LL01.

Thanks for all the info guys. I'm going to swap out the factory 0w-20 to my preferred Castrol Edge 5w-30 A3/B4. It worked fine in my other cars. It meets LL-01 which is enough in my opinion. i get from some tuners, that they recommend to use 40 weight oil if you tune your car, for extra protection due to extra pressure from tuning the car.
But i still use 0w-30 on my tuned car, and no problem so far

So I used the Castrol Syntec 0W-40 in my 228 N20 with a stage 1 tune for 98K with 8k changes and OEM filters. I put the same tune on my F31 328 N20 for the last 45K miles with the same schedule. I've also used Mobile1 0W-40 here and there.

Thinking of switching to 5w-40 my next change. It's non-stop 100+ here in socal and the oil has the viscosity of water pretty much when I change it or see it drip off the oil cap running 5w-30

You should be fine. Unless you're doing laps on a race track non stop or oil is burning between oil changes, 5w30 is fine. It may look thin to you but that's what the car is designed to run.
