Video: Is your engine this loud?

Hello guys,

Just bought a 2015 328i xdrive a month ago cpo, with only 55k kms and I could be paranoid here, but I'll let the video speak for itself:

See the thing is, I drove a friends 328i same year and everything, except hers was the M package, mine's luxury, and hers was ALOT quieter than mine on idle. I took it back to the dealership yesterday and the service guy said it's a normal sound, but if I really wanted it inspected it'll be $200, and re-assured me cpo means it's in a pristine condition. What do you guys think is this normal?

That's more or less what mine sounds like with the hood open, not nearly so bad with it closed. I can't tell if your hood is open or not, the video quality being quite poor. Try again during daylight hours.

If you want it to sound more 'refined' lose the direct fuel injection and use a carburetor.

Right... but my previous car 2013 Honda Civic Si is much more refine. It does have fuel injectors and not carburetor.

Fuel injected yes, but multiport, not direct. Added noise is one of the prices paid for the better performance of direct injection.

Same here. I got my 328ix car with 4.5K on it and when my buddy heard it he said it sounded like it needed a tuneup. I agreed but then learned they are all noisy 4-bangers

The ticking sound is normal - however yours sounds a bit louder than mine. Try using Chevron Techron Fuel System Cleaner. It always seems to help mine idle smoother.

It's just a camera/mic trick... when I take a video with my phone it sounds like that very loud. But if I take my expensive mic from my computer and it sound less and accurate.

This is why those exhaust sound clip sound horrible.

Was that video taken at operating temp or cold start?

Thanks for all your responses guys I appreciate it.

Sorry for the poor quality I broke my phones back camera a week ago, quality will be bad regardless day or night lol.

The car was at an operating temperature and the hood was open at the time of the video. What concerns me the most is that I just bought this car. What if the noise only gets worse and eventually something bad happens?

I'm getting recommendations to use a techron fuel system cleaner, I just ordered a bunch off amazon I hope this works. Will keep you posted.

Thanks again!

Yup. Try putting in a bottle of Liqui Moly Ceratec with your next oil change. It quieted mine down a heck of a lot.

+1, and since the noise is mainly from the fuel injectors and high pressure fuel pump the condition of the oil has nothing to do with it.

Garage List
My premium fueled 430i sounds like a Diesel at first start then quiets down to a muted Diesel afterward and it's MY 2019. I can't imagine what it will be like next year when it's a year older. Meanwhile my pushrod 5.4L Chevy V8 is quiet as a church mouse running on cheap unleaded.

Mine sounds the same. I searched all over about it. Turns out is the direct injection like others have mentioned. I just tell everyone mine is a diesel 🤷*♂️
