Agree, Porsche will be using high output lightweight V6 for Cayenne S/GTS next year, not sure if BMW is going to follow but this is the trend.

There are strong rumors of this very scenario happening for the next generation Mercedes E500 (yes, even including the I6 configuration). If it plays out like that, I think its a fair bet BMW and Audi will follow. Toyota already dropped the V8 from the GS, and Cadillac never had one in the CTS (non-V, I mean). For this class of vehicle, the V8 may soon be exclusive only to the high performance models (M, AMG, RS, V, F, etc).

Correct me If i'm wrong.
The 3-cylinder is the B38, and it's getting solid reviews. The B58 is the upcoming midrange turbo I6, which will replace the N55 in much of BMW's lineup.

There was an E34 535i 5-series, so the 330 won't be the first time BMW has lapped itself on model designation.

There's already a 325i with N20B20 @ 215hp.

IMHO, they will not do a 323i. I suspect they'll settle in on multiples of five now with the 328i gone. The 316i and 318i will likely also go away at some point in favor of a 315i powered by the B38 inline 3. I suspect the next generation 320i will also switch to the I3.

The question remains whether they'll keep a 335i around in some regions much like Audi has the lower-tune A4 V6 sitting below the S4. If they do end up doing that, come next generation, it'll actually be a very straightforward lineup:

315i, 320i - B38B15 <= 200hp
325i, 330i - B48B20 <= 300hp
335i, 340i - B58B30 <= 400hp

It's pretty much the same to this day.

I highly doubt the "new" 340/440 engines will product 340 HP (at least not advertised). They will most likely be around 320 HP. Otherwise you are playing to close to the M3 power numbers and would have no where for a M340 to fit in (which you know is coming).

The engine codes still make sense, it's just the model numbers that have gone astray.

These model designations are really getting out of hand. But then again, we've known that for over 10 years. Behold the power of marketing...

They'll probably bring the proper names back later on. ie., B48 in the F30 330i rechristined as a base model 325i in the next generation (or two)
