Does speed rating make any difference?

I just purchased 4 new Michelin Pilot Sport AS 3+ tires and the salesman told me the only difference between a “V” tire and a “Y” tire is top speed...I ended up buying the “V” tire as that was what the original tires were rated...Did I get duped??

The DOT requires tires rated for the top speed on the speedometer on a new car.

When they are replaced, you can, at your own risk, put the cheapest POS tires on you want.

Those ratings are for sustained speeds and the related heat, not momentary speeds.

I certainly don’t expect to reach 149 mph at all,let alone for “sustained speeds”...appreciate the info though....didn’t know if the rating affected tread, grip etc...
