2014 F30 Steering column paddle gear shifter mod

This is for anyone else who likes to use the paddle gear shifters in automatics, but hates the fact that BMW mounts them on the steering wheel. The good news is that it is possible to convert to steering-column mounted paddles, though not without more work than most would think reasonable. The result is pretty discreet, and fully functional (see pictures).

The only extra expense is a pair of paddles from a donor car. Most of the high-performance exotics (Ferrari, Maserati, Aston Martin etc.) use column mounting because it allows shifting during tight cornering, but it is more expensive. I decided on a pair from an Infiniti G37, mainly because they come as two separate mounts, rather than on a frame (which I guessed would be harder to modify). They also match the BMW interior design quite well and, as it turns out, fit the wheel perfectly if mounted using two of the existing screws that hold the switch cluster to the column. There seem to be several of these on Ebay for around $200, because it is a standard Nissan part on many of their models, including the GTR.

If anyone is interested, I can post more instructions and pictures, but I warn you that the mod requires some soldering, and a lot of fiddly plastic surgery.

I'm so interested I doing something like this to my F82. I'm not a fan of steering mounted paddles and would much rather have them column mounted. Is there a kit that can be purchased?
