First time private sale questions

Car has a clean carfax and shown many pictures
Seller is willing to drive 5 hours to come to me but is asking for a deposit it's not much but to me it's weird at the same time understandable in case he waste his time driving that far... but is there another way to insure me everything works out? I guess the paranoid side of me is thinking What if I make a deposit and he never delivers? Should I take a leap of faith? The car is a good deal.

Forget that deposit. Lol, no way i'd invest even a penny into a car that I haven't seen in person. Car could be a complete shit box in person. I'd play it safe OP and tell him you aren't willing to throw money at a car you haven't seen.

Did you have a chance to review all maintenance records first?

5 hours. Wow. I can see things getting REALLY weird if you don't like the car once you see it.

But you could always drive out if you REALLY want the car too right? No pressure to buy on you or him.

Yes but I've got no buddies to come with me all the way out there so I told him I'd be more comfortable with him coming to me... I was sure I'd like the car if everything he said was true

Yes that's what I've come down to I declined and even offered to make a deposit through PayPal only so that I'd be insured. He didn't even want to do that he offered platforms like Venmo and I said hell no. It was too good to be true but who knows. It's in the NY area

It would be wise to look for another car at this point.

I've been screwed so many times for being too trusting. Go into a deal assuming the other person is going to screw you and take proper precautions. Do this and you never ever have to ask for advise like this again. In short, I would not give a deposit.

Rina98, there are so many good deals out there. I am sure you will find the right car. Sometimes, it's worthwhile to get the car from a snow / ice free state, buy it, and just enjoy the ride home.
