Windshield Replacement

Hi peeps -

So I need to get my windshield replaced. I have comprehensive glass coverage (fully covered) with no deductible. I verified with my insurance that my policy cost will NOT increase. The only caveat is that they want me to use one of their authorized installers, in this case Safelite. I requested OE or OEM glass which they've agreed to cover. I have HUD and rain sensor so I want to make sure I get a glass that works properly.

Has anyone had any experience with Safelite?

I've read pretty good things about Safelite. Lots of good reviews online for the shop I'm scheduled to bring it into.

I have used Safelite with other cars and have not had any issues with them. I have seen a few other forum posters saying they have had issues. It seems that depending where you are, you may have vastly different experiences. Maybe try to find out about people's experiences for the local shop you plan to use.

Take note of the brand of glass that you have. Don't settle for anything else. I know for other models Pilkington is OEM.

I was on the same boat. I requested the OE windshield. The guy came to my house and i sat with him during the entire time. He was super nice but had a lot of difficulty trying to get the original windshield off. I haven't had any issues with the rain sensors or leaking though. He did tell me that they do get paid by the amount of vehicles they do so I do see the possibility of them rushing however he also mentioned if you do provide negative feedback or followup with them they end up not getting paid and obviously have to go back to fix it.

With HUD they should use OEM and dealer installation. Here in CA they are required to allow dealer install.

I stopped by a Safelite shop near me the other day to see if they had replacement gel pads/kits to reapply my rain sensor. They told me they don't use anything like that and that they order a completely new sensor when they order the new glass.

Based on that experience alone, I think you'll be OK with Safelite.

Had mine replaced about 2 years ago by Safelite here in Melbourne. I have HUD, Auto-Dim and Rain Sensor. No problems, no sweat. This is what they installed:

I have used Safelite before and had good results all except once.

They have regional locations you can go to as well, perhaps you could call that location and get an appointment that would align you with one of their more experienced techs, not just the guy who happens to be in your area.

Last time I tried a local independent place that got the Pilkington glass, but without the BMW logo on it. They have been around awhile and I was able to ensure the guy doing the work was an experienced tech. I have had zero issues.

Thanks. So the shop I'm planning on going to is an actual Safelite shop, not like one of those "authorized" centers. Also, it looks like there's around 775 reviews of the place and most are 5 stars. I think I'm going to try it but I'm going to make sure the windshield they replace mine with is acceptable (OEM).

I would take it to the dealer for this, but make sure that they use their techs and bmw procedure. I have seen some pretty jacked up weather stripping and plastic cowls courtesy of after market installers. The other important thing is to let it cure on a level surface for at least 24 hours, preferably 48 hours. Any place that tells you differently is BS!

I had to use Safelite for a six inch crack in center of windshield from road debris 6 months ago.

Prompt
Professional
And 0 problems since the replacement

Got my windshield with hud replaced by safelite and they did a great job. Came to my office while I was at work and took care of it. The only thing is noticed is the hud is not as sharp as it was on the stock glass. Like a bit more focus adjustment would clear it up. For the price Vs oem I am happy.

Had mine replaced last week with safelite I got Allstate as insurance and they cane to my job took like almost a 1 hour for the whole install and!
The only thing they didn’t use a OEM one the insurance will only change with a OEM one if the car it’s from 2016 and up .
I got a 335 2015 so they installed a regular one but I got HUD and rain sensor but they set everytginh back to normal again actually I only had to regulate the brightness for the HUD little above than half but everything is nice and sharp so not complain so far they really did a good job tho!
Hope everything will work out for you as well!

I have the stock windshield and the HUD is just ever so slightly out of focus. I never noticed until recently so it's very possible you just noticed it since you were looking to find issues with your new windshield. It doesn't bother me at all, I just notice it if I really pay attention.

So my point is, it could always have been like that. I feel like the focus is dependent on the actual projector in the dashboard and the windshield distance I feel like it could not have changed that much with the replacement.

I had no issues with SafeLite.

With that said, I had the windshield replaced 3 times in about a month span for ghosting issues. Twice with Fuyao and once with Pilkingron OEM glass. Unfortunately the ghosting issue persists and I don't know if I'm going to bother to have it replaced yet again.

At this point I wonder what the return rate for cars equipped with HUD's are for replacement glass.

Wonder if the issue may be with the HUD projector or the clear cover over it. Strange that 3 windshields in a row are all bad for the same issue.
