4 Series dash speaker.

Today around 10 mins into my journey i had a lovely crackling sound from my center HK dash speaker , followed by the unmistakable smell of fried electronics.

Luckily i was minutes from my local BMW dealership so i popped in and asked them to have a look, after two hours of looking they could find nothing wrong even though there was no sound from the center speaker and the inside of the car still smelt of burning electronics. After being told three times where the sound and smell came from they still never popped off the speaker cover to have a look and take out the three screws to remove the speaker

Anyway , it will be at least two weeks before they can take another look , longer if i need a courtesy car ,seriously

So, is this blowing HK speaker thing common on the F3X cars ?

It's often better to use BMW assist rather than go to the dealer yourself. Electrical burning smell should set alarm bells ringing regardless of where it has originated from.

If i was any further away or there was smoke then i would have , it was literately a two min drive. I was on an unlit backroad so i didnt fancy getting out of the car and waiting for a man with a van to arrive.

Anyway , it looks like a 5 min job to remove it and it is the same mid and tweeter that is fitted everywhere else within the car so they are plentiful on eBay.

If the speaker has burnt out then it will more than likely have taken the amp with it.

Now there is no sound at all from the HU , no clock , no vehicle data at all displayed on the screen , no GPS signal.

Tried a reset but still nout.

Bugger.

Tried again this morning and all was good apart from the center speaker not working , for about 5 mins then the crackling and burning smell started again followed by silence from the HU.

On the phone to BMW assist , car booked into the local dealers for a look and a 216 GT is now parked in the driveway where the 440 sat.

We will wait to see what they have to say over the next few days.

It will be the amp that's killed the speaker, not the other way round. For some reason, BMW decided to put the amp in the boot on the left right under where people often store liquid. The tiniest bit of water will kill the amp.

I had a look under the plastic cover in the boot where the amp sits and it was all dry. What did surprise me was that the amp looks to be located flat onto the chassis , you would think that a few spacers under the amp would prevent potential moisture ingress.

Hopefully we will find out later today.

Update x 2 , got the car back last Friday after two days in dealers , they replaced the dash speakers and all was good until last night when it all started again - speaker crackling and a smell of burning followed by loss of all audio sound.

Popped into the dealers earlier on today and they cant look at it until the 27/12 , longer if a want a CC.

Both times it has been really damp outside so i am wondering if there is moisture getting into the amp, due to its location next to the vent in the boot, and causing the problems.

Correct , car returned today with a new amp and another dash speaker.

Only downside is i now need to recode the HU and FEM to my requirements as it has all been wiped.
