Dyno Day - Mildly Modified 340i & 335is

Last Sunday we got together with a good friend and visited Mack Motorsports in our hometown to see how much power our cars are making. Since the owner is a BMW guy and his Facebook post read "ST Dyno Day", we concluded that it was "Single Turbo Dyno Day". Even though we intended to see some heavily modified BMWs, we arrived at a shop full of Ford Focus and Fiestas

Because we got there a little late, we had to wait until we were able to get on the roller. For those who might ask, I'm not aware of the barometric pressure or humidity during testing. However, I can tell you that it was fairly hot for March (low 80s) and we are at sea level.

My car is a 2017 340i with an Activ-8 tune, Dinan CF CAI and Dinan Mid-pipe. RWD, 8 spd ZF. No E85, just Shell V-Power (93 oct).

My friend's beautiful 2013 335is coupe (with 3 pedals), has a flash tune and downpipes.

Seemed like most cars were reading high torque numbers and low hp so I didn't expect much. There was another guy that ran an N55 335i cv (auto) with JB4, downpipe and a little E85. He made 320 WHP and 370 lb ft TQ.

We made two pulls each, his best was 332 WHP and 370 lb ft TQ.
To both our surprises, my car made 377 WHP and 372 lb ft TQ.

This platform keeps exceeding my expectations. Two days before, cruising to the Porsche Werks reunion in Amelia Island on the ECO PRO mode (sorry, I know it's a sin) it averaged 39.4 mpg.

The car ran a 13.01 1/4 mile at 107.86 mph completely stock. I can't wait to go back to the track and see what it can do now. I will need a new set of tires before going though, my S001 RFTs are at 4/32" at the rear and I suspect they will not be hooking the way they did last time...

As overpriced as it is, i think the Dinan intake makes a bigger improvement than people want to credit it for. There's a lot of value in a high-flowing closed intake. That with a flash tune and downpipe will put you over 400whp easy, even on their heartbreaker dyno.

Oh wow!! These b58s are starting to make me nervous! Hahaha I can't wait to catch one on the streets. I keep reading the active autowerks tunes are the most aggressive flash. I'm on a budget and went with MHD stage 2+. Curiosity has be wondering how much more they are able to get. The Pros Know.

It must be efficient aside from looking good. To be honest, I didn't feel much of a difference after install, just a bit more throttle response. However, the numbers don't lie. The combination seems to be working.

Active Autowerke is usually forgotten when it comes to piggybacks since they are more expensive and offer less customization than JB4. On the plus side, it's an easy install, quality construction and <knock on wood> it's never given me any problems, just a nice power increase that you can immediately feel. It's great for those that are not interested in logging, changing maps on the fly, going with other types of fuel, etc... I'm happy with it.

That’s not a heartbreaker dyno -the older N55s just have shit top end due to small turbos.

A good flash is a 400whp SAE car I’d bet. I like that it carries power to redline.

No they don’t. If you want to get technical the largest, shortest, and least restrictive filter will out power any “cold air” setup. When moving the air inside the engine bay is not hot. Some piping is good for response and you will lose power with a filter just on the turbo or throttle body. But the myth of closed box/intake in the fender for cold air has been debunked by many high performance racers.

Awesome numbers. 377 SAE is solid for just an AA piggyback. A catless dp would put you close to 400.

Thank you! I know the catless DP will probably be the logical next modification to make more power. I don't think I'd go that route because of the smell and CEL light, though. I'd probably settle for a trans flash to gain a little bit of smoothness and spend the money on a set of Michelin PS4S.
