Ah I see. Thanks

Not looking good. My symptoms match known transfer case failure symptons. My warranty is still valid, so I should be fine. I will update once the failure is verified!

At this point it could be anything, even a boost leak and limp mode, etc. Let us know of the codes associated with whatever may be going on.

Well, I let my paranoia get the best of me. 2 coils died so the dealer replaced them and the plugs.

For split second I thought the dealer pulled a fast one on you since diesels dont have spark plugs, but then I looked at your signature.

I got a letter today saying remedy available from my last car (F31 Diesel) my 328i had the TC go out at the same time as my diesel so I don't understand why they don't just recall all ATC35 units.

You know they're not updating anything to the transfer case itself, right?

That excellent. Was it pretty straightforward? I am hoping to get my previous repair reimbursed later this month.

Unfortunately, it wasn't easy. Initially, BMW Palm Springs replaced my cv joint (per the recall) and denied my claim for reimbursement. They stated there wasn't an issue with the transfer case and cv joint because there wasn't rust. (Of course there isn't rust, it's a brand new transfer case and accessories that your dealership replaced.) They told me to contact BMW NA because I might have better luck, even though the TREAD ACT clearly states the dealership should rectify the issue of reimbursement.

So knowing this I contacted BMW NA and filed a complaint on the dealership right away and then I asked if they can reimburse me. And of course they gave me the run around and told me the dealership needs to handle that. But they would gladly appoint me a Conflict Officer to help with my complaint. And in one day I had the Service Manager of Palm Springs call me to fix the issue. Then 4 days after she said my reimbursement was approved. Then a week after that I got my check.

Long story short, file a complaint when you know you have a case or are right!

I can't seem to add to the list. At 77k miles there was a horrendous judder from the transfer case when engaging reverse or revving at idle to 1.5k.

435d x drive. 2015.

2015 F31 328dX went in for the recall today and will be getting a new transfer case. Dealer mentioned a number of other cars there for the same reason.

Getting a new TC is nice and all, till you realize you'll be in the same predicament in 40k miles.

I doubt it. They're correcting the primary vibration wear failure mode with the more compliant giubo. Why would they spend all this money to have an ineffective recall?

Because everyone will eventually be out of warranty by the time it happens a second time.

Mine was replaced 2 months ago, does that mean I got the new guibo? Seems like nobody knows what's going on.

I'm pretty sure both of my failures have been the clutch pack slipping/skipping. I had codes for the tc saying it's at its end of service life.

On the diesels I know there was a water intrusion/rust issue.

Yes the new guibo is actually a new revised version. And it also states a new BMW part number on the recall and my invoice. @enabled explains it well

Many were already out of warranty the first time around, so it doesn't matter if they'd be out of warranty, "the next time."

It does matter hence why I made my first comment.

I think most people catch it in warranty as well.

A recall covers the parts and labor to fix your car. The warranty status does not matter.
The dealership might try to say it's a different problem the second time it breaks, but that's a totally different argument.

Recalls are generally for safety related issues and they usually revise said parts. The TC is considered safety related due to possible loss of power. Or something as bad as the Takata airbag recall.

A warranty extension on the other hand or "voluntary recall" is where if the part so happens to fail it will be covered, but I don't really see revisions for those.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

At first you seem to imply that BMW only wants to fix it under a recall 1 time and that the second time it fails, the owner will have to pay for it.
Then you try to explain what a recall actually is.
Please clarify your point.
