BMW- Don't they just make the best diesel engines?

Seems like a nice time to celebrate the BMW diesel engine for some reason...

I'm and out and out car nut, and especially BMW geek. I don't currently have a proper petrol sports car in the household just now, which I hope to rectify soon, just the 335d for me and the Cooper SD 5 door for the wife at the moment.

It has to be said that both engines are fantastic. Mine has ticked up 56k miles in less than two years with remap on it it for over half those miles, and has never missed a beat (I never know what that phrase really means but everyone uses this cliche!). It's had three services and not needed a single drop of oil in between, it's taken me to 163mph on the autobahn, done the 1/4 mile at Santa Pod in 12.7 secs, and taken laps of Bedford and the Nurburgring in it's stride. Despite all that I'm getting 37mpg from it these days.
Yes it does sound like a diesel, but I do genuinely love the characterful rumble it makes. I've modified my exhaust and ditched the backbox, and that adds a little too. I really don't see the need for the fake engine noise, so disconnected it.
It pulls hard, and it revs happily to the red line, and in combo with the ZF 8 speed is an absolute pleasure to use every day. As drivetrains go I think it's spoiled me for the rest of my life now.
This has to be one of the best diesel engines of all time.

The wife's Mini is a well built car, and the 4 pot diesel is a cracker- seems to pull harder than the 335d at times, though perhaps not very long lived. What gets me is that despite being used for lots of shorter and mainly urban and rush hour journeys, the thing is doing 58mpg.

Totally agree. BMW diesel really is a good product.

Don't think there are many "eligible" posters on here who would disagree!

I can't wait to get my 335d! I'm driving an old Vauxhall with a big old 3.0tdi Isuzu lump in it but I'm actually starting to like it! I'm selling an RS6 but using half the fuel travelling at the same speed on the motorway is really growing on me! My old neighbour had an old shape 320d touring that he had remapped and really raved about it, he convinced me a BMW diesel is the way to go!

Reading posts like this really make me feel reassured I've made the right decision.
I think i now understand the saying "Once you go black you don't go back!"

I really do think diesel technology is the future. I find it difficult to believe anyone would think otherwise really.

Interestingly this does seem to be supported by a Greek opinion Poll (coincidence or what?) that I saw which said that 98.7% of Greeks also favoured Diesel over that other fuel.

Best in the business. Have been for years.

Efficient Dynamics approach was also out years before other manufacturers cottoned on.

Clever guys and hope they remain I dependant forever vs Audi getting swallowed in VAG.

I mean these modern diesels offer performance that was very very very fast hit hatch pace not many years ago.

Don't get wrong, I really do love petrol, but I do 30k miles a year and still like to go fast. In that situation I can't see past the car I've got.
And on the public road I can keep up with pretty much anything if required.

They just about match supercar performance from 20ish years ago!

This thread is to wind up NTG while he can't post back, right?

But I agree, BMW make some fantastic, economical performance engines for sure.......

Very, very pleased indeed with my car after 2 years.

No arguments from me Terry. The only engine I'd want more would be a boxer 6, and that needs a 911 body wrapped around it. Even that's starting to slip as Porsche move to forced induction. I just hope they manage to keep the 'woofle' that characterises the boxer engine.

As it is the BMW in-line 6 diesel, a Touring bodyshell, and 'the mods' ticks all my needs.

I'm just sharing my high regard for the beating heart of my car, which despite an indifferent first few months has well and truly become the best car I've ever owned.
It's not perfect, but that engine just about is.

bmw engines are astonishing regardless but this generation of the 35d engine specifically is by far the hands down must have diesel performer right now. it has been for 3 years and will continue to be for another 3 at least.

the lump, the box and drivetrain all work so well. my only gripe is x-drive! I love it, I really do. and I can kick the backend more often than not quite freely. but I wish there was a little more rear involved! or a drift mode like the new focus rs has. where's me damn drift mode!!

I've admired the BMW diesels from afar for many years and just couldn't believe the power and performance the engines could deliver relative to the mpg.

When you compare the range of engines they have on offer compared to other manufacturers like MB and Audi l think BMW wipes the floor with them. From the 116d to the 335d, the engines are class leading in terms of power, performance and economy.

I love the blend of performance and economy that the bmw Diesel engine delivers.

Take the 335 diesel for example: economical, and yet quicker to 60 than many warm hatches, including the M135i for example.

Well I hate to point out that all three BMW diesels(three of them) have been faster than all the M135i's (three of them) that have done the Bedford How fast sessions.

I think it's quicker to 60 than just about any hot hatch, bar the RS3 and A45.

Another one here feeling the love for BMWs Diesel engines.

Simple proof to how good they are.......I get the impression we are all really petrol heads at heart, and yet we have voted with our wallets and bought a diesel........largely without regret. Yes it isn't the sexy option, but in all honesty there isn't a comparable petrol engine that ticks as many boxes as the diesels in the range, despite a predisposition for a petrol engine. That says it all.

There is no question that bmw petrol and Diesel engines are way better than vag in terms of efficiency and i have owned plenty of both..

I had an a3 tdi 170 before my 330d so how can a small hatch with a poxy 4 pot manage just 47 mpg when my heavier 6 cyl 330d does 45 ?!

Same when I ran a TTS it was shocking on fuel and used more than my 135 coupe which had more cylinders and more power

I ummed and ared for a long time, well actually 48 hours whether to go diesel again or petrol.

My last (current) dog carrying transport was a 2012 C350 estate and whilst it only had circa 260hp the torque made it a very likeable companion.

I really was teetering either way as whether to go 335d or 340i but I really do believe the powers that be will very soon clamp down on diesel cars especially now that the petrols are not as far behind in the MPG stakes as they used to be.

I think anyone that does high miles would be silly to go 340i over 335d and it would be great to get a poll going to see what 335d owners annual mileages are.

All great cars even if the diesels do have a 'faggoty' exhaust

Agree completely that BMW make great diesels. We have my 330d and my wife's 125d. Both quick, frugal and refined. The new 2.0 in the LCI 125d is way better than the 2.0 engine I had in 520d in '12. It shifts too.

BMW please give us the X50d triple turbo engine as an option in the 3 and 4 series. That would be an awesome point to point sprinter that would embarrass most fast ethanol burners.
