went to put my 400m winter wheels on. Usually just bolt on, no probs. All going fine. wheels fitted. Then discovered metal dust caps had corroded onto the TPMS alloys. Blew 2 valves trying to get em off. 40 quid later from BMW, new ones fitted by local indy as BMW couldn't accommodate me today.
However, just had a horrible thought that I don't think they balanced the wheels when swapping valve. Grrrrr. Will find out tomorrow........ |

I posted about this 'nearly' happening earlier this year. BMW have now moved onto silver plastic caps which won't corrode on. I caught the ones on my previous car early before the corroded through. If you still have metal caps try a bit of silicone grease on the threads.

Can you trace the valve caps back to a dealer? I first met the problem on a two year old Laguna with TPMS in 2003(?)!!! - caught at the stage where the caps could be removed but the stem thread had gone. There's a copy of a 2010 technical bulletin from Schrader at Approved OEM Requirement for Replacement of Sealing & Wearable Components on TPMS Sensors
"It is also important to use the plastic replacement cap to ensure that a dissimilar metal cap is not used to contact the aluminum stem" |

I've always used a touch of copper grease on any steel caps of all my past motors to stop this happening. especially if you don't check tyre pressures regularly. Also tighten them up a fraction with a pair of pliers, to stop the buggers from nicking them. |

I had this with the wife's car. Fortunately it didn't have the latest TPMS so I just needed new valves. It has plastic caps now.
