Just a quick update from me, just finished putting the engine back together. Good as new (or better?) All updated parts, hopefully i can get another 100K out of this thing. I now have all the tools AND experience to fix the timing chain problem, so, if after the suit settles and some of you don't benefit, do hit me up and i will help out. I have all the receipts and haven't added them up yet, but the total cost is around $1500 (parts and Harbor Freight tools). Thanks and good weekend all!

What are the potential outcomes of the court case? It's only applicable to those who have had timing chain issues?

You can call BMWNA directly and ask for help but like you mentioned, I was only allowed to go up one level and it was just a waste of time. Part of the case has a complaint alleging that BMW knew of the defect and was using this to generate revenue (money) through service in repairs. That part I believe was dismissed but the engine failure was not. I would just like them to replace the engine, although I am now out of a usable car for 7 months. It would be nice if there was some time of compensation for this.

I totally agree with that they handled this wrong. I am sure there is a HUGE price tag to go along with this... They wanted 18k to replace my engine so using 15k assuming a moddest 50,000 cars... 750 million is a lot of money.

Probably cheaper for a buyback honestly. Give me a M6 and we can call it even!
I suggested something similar to that. I said give me something to drive until my loan is paid off (it is financed through BMW). Once that happens...I turn it in and walk away no questions asked...they refused and said they would do nothing further. I asked to speak to that person's supervisor. She told me I couldn't. I almost lost it at that point but held it together. I am considering finding a used engine and having my indy put it in. Put the whole thing on a 1yr interest-free rewards credit card. Then roll the dice and hope the lawsuit settles in our favor to repay the cost. I want to put a 2016 motor in it so I can guarantee that it won't blow up again. Anyone got any recommendations on where to purchase an engine from. All kinds of places on the web. I want someone that is reputable. At a minimum...I should get some free airline tix out of it!

When i was considering putting a new engine in, eBay had several available and you can look at seller’s reputation. 2016 might be more expensive and all you’ll get it same thing with updated timing chain and i’m not sure if you’ll run in into any compatibility issues as there may be minor changes. Me being European living in US, i shipped all the parts from Europe for half the cost what it is here in US. Same brands. All the parts cost me around $1200 but i went as far as replacing cylinder rings, rod bearings etc. i only had 1 bent valve and did it myself in my driveway. Let me know if you have any additional questions.

I have good friend in wholesale Euro parts biz in NYC; a year or so ago we chatted about the 4 banger motor issues, at the time he told me BMW was selling replacement N20/26 engines for darn cheap- IIRC in $4k range.
This was when the timing chain guide failure issue was kind of hot.

Great thread!

From my understanding the updated parts were from 01/15 and on but recently there is a bulletin from BMW that the 7/70 warranty is up to 02/15. So maybe n20 produced from 01/15 to 02/15 may or may not have the updated parts? Is it true that looking into the oil filler, if you see white timing chain guides it’s the new parts vs yellow it’s the old?

Correct, just unscrew the oil cap (where you put the oil) and you will clearly see the chain and rails. As you said, white - new, old - dark yellow/brown. I can take a picture of mine in the morning as it now has a couple of hundred miles on it. Thanks

Just looked at my recently acquired 01/15 built 428 GC and the chain guide is brown haha. I don’t have the symptoms (yet) but I’m at around 57k miles. I will pick around at my local dealers but since this isn’t a recall, the engine has to either:

A. Experience the whine for them to do the warranty work?
B. Blow up for them to do the warranty work?

I have until my odometer hits 100k miles to get this replaced preventatively as my Maxcare warranty ends at that mileage. Bmw knew they screwed up and they won’t stand by their product and give a lousy warranty rather than a recall.

....this is NOT accurate information . See video posted on previous thread re: inconsistent info on this important timing chain topic. The video clearly shows white timing chain guide being installed in an n20 engine in 2012.

Learn something new everyday. This explains why BMW issued the warranty for cars built through 02/15. I’ll get more clarification from dealers soon to see what they’ll say and share on here.

I think I am going to bite the bullet and roll the dice. My independent guy found me a 2017 engine with 14,000 miles not it. He said he will do the whole thing for $5,000. That's a great deal in my option. Then I can just hope the lawsuit settles and I can get reimbursed. Now I just gotta find a way to sneak it off the dealer's lot. I am not paying them a dime...seeing that I knew when I good it there that the engine was already toasted as confirmed by the independent previously. The indy guy said he might even tear the old engine down on this own time...just to see if my chance it is repairable before replacing it. The guy is super cool!!!

Did you pull this off w/o any trouble? Be glad to share details please.

So in another thread regarding the b48 recalls, a member mentioned that his dealer said his n20 x3 is covered for 7/125. I search and couldn’t find any word regarding BMW extending the warranty from 7/70 to 7/125. Spoke to one of my local dealers and they insisted it’s still 7/70.

yes...the car is at the indy guys shop. The dealer actually called me last week to see what we were going to do with the car. I advised that my indy mechanic would be by to get it soon. He seemed cool with that and did not mention anything about money that I might owe the dealership. So, I am going to assume that part of the issue is over with.

Soooooo.....my dealer will be doing the warranty work for me w/o any symptoms. Dropping it off next Monday the 25th with a loaner. Was told that it’ll take 4-5 days? Not really going to question that as I feel the dealer is doing me a big solid here.

No, not while there is an active class action lawsuit.
