Exclamation 2016 340i Instrument Cluster Freakout

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Today I was leaving an outpatient site (I work in healthcare) heading back to costco before going back to work and as I exited the freeway I lost my HUD. It came back a few seconds later, and then gone again. I slowed down to stop at the intersection, turned on my turn signal and looked down at my instrument cluster and saw this:

I recorded a quick video (22 seconds) and I would say the entire thing lasted about 120 seconds, as the cluster started working once I was underway again (about 20 mph).

I skipped costco and went straight to the dealer with the car acting like everything was normal. I showed my Service Advisor who took my complaint seriously and called his shop foreman to watch the video with me. This could be considered a major safety issue because a) you dont know your current speed b) did the outside turn signal turn off with the cluster c) other impending electrical failures imminent? That said, I'm not treating it as a, major epic o-m-g BMW needs to buy back this car, type of moment, but it did freak me out a little.

Its at the dealer now and we'll see how it goes.

Software update will fix it. i had it happen on my 340 only when i had an active navigation route going.

Known software bug. Only happens when nav is active.

This happened to me too, i had my car in service and they updated the software. Only had it back a few days, still waiting to see if its going to happen again. The service rep did note this as a safety issue.

What did the dealer suggest to fix the problem?

Yep just stay current with software. Usually a full on/off cycle will act as a soft reset

The exact same thing happened to my car last weekend as I was exiting the highway with an active Nav Route, I had my phone connected via bluetooth and was streaming music and as soon as I turned on my right turn signal the same thing happened. I was a bit confused and sure enough as soon as i turned on my turn signal again it did it at will. Hasn't done it since.

I called my dealer immediately and they didn't seem concerned about or have heard of anything like this happening. Definitely seems like a software issue to me and i am not sure if i should be concerned about it or not.

Dealership called me this afternoon and said they saw the faults and they updated the software (like everyone said here). I'll make sure to turn on software updates in the menu (wherever that is) and keep those installed.

Where exactly are software updates turned on?

It was my understanding that only the NAV received over the air updates, not the internal computers.

Could just be a glitch on the CAN bus that talks to everything. My E90 had issues a couple times where the audio stopped working, and I got a nice high pitched sound through the rear speakers. Fun stuff...

Usually turning it off, waiting 1/2 hour (then the DME has killed power to everything in the car), and restarting it and it's fine.

Should this happen? Nah. But it is run by computers, so sometimes there are issues.

Had the same issue today while using Navigation. How do I double check that I have automatic updates on? Am I going to have to take it into the dealer to get this resolved?

I remember this used to happen on my 135i because of the jb4. Hot day + shitty wiring on the CANBUS and my instrument cluster would freak out.

This worries me about getting a JB4 if the electrical is already freaking out.

You ill need to take it to the dealer. Your car does not do over the air firmware updates like this.

It happened to me as well a few weeks ago with my 340i when I was exiting a freeway while streaming music via Bluetooth, and with the Navigation on.

This happened to me, BMW updated the software twice, replaced the dashboard and it still didn't fix the issue. The car was rejected and new one built, dice the replacement arrived it's been fine.

My issue happened near an airport and a few people have said the same thing happened to them at the same place

Also there are a couple of the same fault mention on the m3 forums.

Its really weird, when mine malfunctions its always while coming down the same ramp.

Did BMW replace your vehicle?

Same as mine and same as a couple of other. The dealer seemed to think that it might be some sort of jammer at the airport (I have active cruise).

But yeah BMW replaced the car and when I tested it recently the fault never happened.

Mine didn't happen near an airport.

So software won't fix this? It's only happened once. After the issue my Navigations said "new update, restarting". Hasn't happened since. I can't imagine them replacing a car for this.

I also wasn't near an airport when that happened. I had my software updated and error cleared by the dealer. Will see if it comes back, or they said they will be replacing the cluster.

I had the same issue on my car a couple of weeks back. I was driving with the navigation on and slowing down to make a turn at an intersection and I had the same thing happen as posted in the videos above.

FWIW, my car is a July 2015 build out of Munich.

I'm coming up on my 1st oil change next month and have added this to my service appointment.

My service adviser said that you can update the software via USB stick if you download it from the BMW website. I'm not sure if the software we can download is the same the dealers have access to, but its possible.

Mine has not done this since the update, but I am definitely keeping an eye out for it.
