Steering wheel heat not working after conversion

Hey all,

I did an M Sport steering wheel conversion on my non m sport 2015 328d and everything works except the heat.

My car just has cruise control and heated wheel as options.

On real oem is says the correct part number for the heating module is 61317849393

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=61_5666

The car is giving me an error message though and the heat does not work:

Does anyone know what I can do to get it working? Is there coding required?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It's worth asking if the M Sport steering wheel has the heating element. There are two versions of the M Sport steering wheel: with and without the heating element.

The M sport wheel I purchased is heated

Got it. Thanks for confirming.

I did the same conversion on 2013 BMW 335i xDrive sedan. No coding was required. As long the steering wheel has the heating element and the control module has been installed, the heated wheel feature should work.

I can only think that either the control module is bad (if it's new - unlikely) or the connectors have a loose connection.

Connectors aren't loose I've double and triple checked.

I bought my module new but it's possible it was damaged or is the wrong part # somehow.

Do you happen to have a part number for the module you used?

Try your other steering wheel again, if it doesn't work with the old steering wheel then there is a connection problem.

Old one is long gone (sold) so that option is out unfortunately. I'm going to see if I can get another module, and if that fails I'll have to check wiring I guess

One more question I should ask is what your option are? Do you have lane change assist (wheel vibration) or just heat?

I just have heat in mine and nothing else so it could be possible we require different parts perhaps?

Just to ask, but since you mentioned you bought the module new, did you code it? A used module would have already had the correct coding for the car, but if the module was brand new, it might require just the basic coding to program it with what options the car has.

I bought this wheel used off of ebay from a seemingly reputable seller. I have tried both the used module that came with the wheel which was part #:61317848638 and after that did not work I tried a brand new one that I looked up on realoem, part# 61317849393. Neither of them allowed the heating function to work. I did not try to do any coding as I wouldn't even know where to begin and wasn't aware there was any needed.

I have also tried going to a bmw dealership to get a diagnostic done or to be told what the problem is and they were absolutely useless in helping. They tried to tell me I needed a new wheel. Not a module. An entirely new wheel. Seriously. I then had my local mastermechanic look at it as well but he's not a bmw specialist so he could only help so much. It's starting to get pretty frustrating.

Is that a steering wheel off an M3/M4 that you bought? The part number that it came with is from one of those, but not an F30, which would explain why it would flag as the wrong version if the old one was in at that point, and won't work in the F30.

As for the new module, yes, if it was brand new, it would require coding, otherwise it has no knowledge of what features/options your car is supposed to have. If you aren't comfortable with trying it yourself, I would try to find someone local who could help with the coding. For explanation of what you need, all they would need to do would be to create a Cafd file for the module and VO code it.

And yeah, unless you are really, really cool with your dealer or know someone personally who works there, they will usually tell you to hit the bricks when it comes to getting help with retrofits that aren't sold by BMW.

Thank you very much, this is super helpful information. I will talk to my local coder and have him take a look at it and hopefully this gets it working.

Update:

Went to coder. He said the module does not show up in ESYS (or whatever program he was using) so according to him it's a hardware related issue. Wheel needs to come apart again and be inspected by someone else I guess. What a PITA.

Update: Issue solved! The problem was coding. Initial coder I went to was wrong I guess. Someone else looked at it and fixed it.

Do you know what they coded exactly? Would be helpful as I'm looking to update modules and looking at those two part numbers as options.
