Slow to warm up engine?

Is there another thread about it, please point me to it. I did a quick search and couldn't find anything.

I have a 2016 340 and under my perception, it takes forever for the temp gauge to get to normal temp. I know that is winter in most parts, but it takes up to 10 mins for the gauge to get to normal temps. All this while driving slow, is there anyone else noticing this? Is it normal for this engines? Thanks in advance.

As Aset mentioned, it's Oil temp not water temp that the guage is reading and it takes longer to get oil up to operating temperature than water.

Oil temp takes a while to come up.. So many variables in terms of outside temp, load on car, whether idling or not, etc...

But 10-15 in cold is not out of the ordinary.

Yeah mine takes forever as well. Probably 15-20 minutes in this shit weather for the needle to get all the way there. It's annoying.

The best WOT opportunity on my commute is the on ramp 10 minutes from my house (I leave early 5AM and it's always empty) and I can't ever hit it since the needle hasn't got close. It's a downhill ramp with a slight turn too .. sucks.

Many many other times I've wanted to get into the boost and the needle is still cold....

And the transmission takes forever to feel warmed up as well. Much more on this car that previous cars I've owned ... it seems to all warm very slowly.

Maybe it has something to do with the fact thats its insulated to retain heat in the engine for 36 hours to prevent engine ware from cold starts. Or perhaps the fact that it uses stressed temperature management for the water to air cooling system. Read the link below, i think you will find the explaination there.

The B58 is by far the quickest engine I've ever owned to warm up, keep in mind that the gauge in the cluster is showing oil temp and not coolant / water temp like in most other cars. The engine warms up quickly mainly because it runs 0w20 oil (very thin, lubricates very well at cold start and warms up quick) and also because it has a more advanced thermostat setup vs the N series motors. The only other car I've had that was similarly quick was my E92 M3 but that's just because the S65 runs very hot.

N54 / N55 and especially an N54is with the additional oil cooler truly take FOREVER to warm up. At the same point in my morning commute where my 340i would be fully warmed up, my 335is needle would still be stuck all the way to the left.

And in reference to the above post, an insulated engine would warm up faster not more slowly.

I agree. The B58 warms up so much faster than my N55.

Hey guys! I don't mean to hijack this thread but I'm having a similar issue. I have a 2013 335i Xdrive Msport 6speed manual w/176k miles.

My heat takes 20+ mins to come out warm, not even hot. My drive takes just under 30 mins. Also I let the car warm up for 5 or so mins on really cold days.

One day I sat in the parking lot idling for another 15 mins after I got to work and it finally blew hot, so about 45 mins of running. Also my center vents seem to blow cooler than the outer ones. Also I replaced the thermostat in an attempt to fix the issue. That wasn't it, warm up times are the same. Looking through the maintenance records I saw the PO had the heater control valve replaced at 90k miles.

The oil temp takes a about 15 or 20 mins to come up to temp. Seems normal. The coolant temp is a lot quicker. Using the app Torque, I watch my coolant temps every time I drive. They hover around 218F. After it warms up for 5 mins its already around 170F.

How can I test the heater control valve? If it were my e28 I would figure out the voltage (probably 12v) and apply that to the + and - terminals on the valve to see if it opened and closed. For this car, I guess it should be the same basic procedure right? Or is there a way to test it with ISTA or my Foxwell 510? I would rebuild it if a kit is available. For the e28 its quite a simple job. haha I expect it to be the opposite for the F30. Does anyone know where the valve is located?

On a side note the thermostat I replaced was the factory unit, it had 176k miles on it. haha
