12.10.19 Final Update - Warranty Denied. DIY upgrading transmission to a USED ZF8HP70

Long story short my warranty claim was denied by BMW because of transmission whining issues “caused by front end damage and modifications”Dumping the ZF8HP50 for the ZF8HP70 transmission

I will keep you all updated on how this goes. This process will take approximately one month since I will be in Vegas for the SEMA convention

I have ordered the transmission online
I am able to Virginize the EGS module with various tools so that’s not a problem.
After having the new gearbox I will be flashing the Alpina D3 transmission software.

Key note: normal ZF8HP70 transmission WILL NOT fit in our cars. Buying a used x5 or x6 f10 transmission looks like a headache and may only work with a adapter plate. (Unconfirmed just my thoughts)

Swapping used transmission WILL NOT work without resetting the ISN code on the “new” transmission

535d zf8hp70 is the transmission I have ordered and appears to have the same bell housing as the ZF8HP50 in my car

As I work on this I will update with photos when I get the transmission to the shop and on the lift.

Hopefully this post will help future F30 owners ❤️

Update 11.22.19

I got the transmission bolted in with just a few issues. Everything goes into gear fluid filled with Liquimoly ATF Top Tech. I also flashed the alpina EGS software but it seems the car now redlines at 5000 RPM so if anyone has a solution for this that would be awesome, if not I will go back to stock software. Second problem is that the BOTH the Gearbox support and Gearbox supporting bracket DO NOT FIT ZF8hp70

So i did some reasearch and at first most would think hey I can put a transmission support from another car with a zf8hp70. Well yes however the F10 transmission does work with F30 chassis and neither does the any other US Spec car. Solution is to get a 330d european version bracket for the ZF8hp70 to fit the F30.

22316850602 is the PN For anyones futre reference.

Currently I am having issues with the transmission Gearbox Support does not fit so i temporarily made a "custom" bracket. I think a 328i or 320i Bracket will fix my problem so I have ordered it and will be here next week and I will update you all on this swap.

Pic of problem:

It looks like everything bolts up perfectly guys, I ordered a transmission crossmember from LKQ and although it looks like it has a bit of corrosion on it it fits 100%. The only last issue I have is when i first started the car after swapping the transmission i heard some chattering and i found out that the starter touches the flywheel slightly. The sound is no longer there after 1 day of driving but I investigated and found that the 535d 330d flywheel will fit in my car which would space it out a little further away from the starter. You guys are probably wondering why it rubs, I am under the impression that the transmission pushes the flywheel forward a little (probably not good) just enough to touch the starter. I will be installing the new flywheel in the next few weeks and will update everyone on what happens. Here is the photos of the transmission bracket fitting.

After I am finished with everything 100% I will post a step by step guide with instructions. By the way if anyone is curious the bracket is a 328i F30 transmission bracket cross member support.

Lastly, you guys are probably wondering about the transmission software issue I had. Well the issue I had was that 535d & 330d both shift and redline at approximately 5000 RPM. Well what I did after many many hours of research and learning more and more on how E-Sys works was find out how to flash the Alpina B3 TCU Software. NOT the Alpina D3. Do not get the two confused. The B3 is the gasoline version which uses the B58 motor as well. I beleive this is true on 2016 and up B3s. The VIN I used was a 2017 Alpina B3. The shiftpoints are perfect on this software and allows me to redline to 7K. Car drives like a dream.

I am sure many of you were wondering in the past if this swap was possible or not. Reference this thread:

https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1492082

Although I am not 100% done with this swap because of the flywheel I am going to safely say that it is 100% possible to swap in a ZF8HP70 out of a N57 motor into our B58. <3

Edit 12.5.19

I was curious about the xHP flasher. I tried to flash my car with xHP but it is NOT supported and when I spoke to someone from xHP they told me it was too costly to create a tune for this particular setup so as of right now there is no xHP flasher. In the mean time the Alpina B3 TCU calibration files will do the trick and hold up perfectly fine

12.10.19 Update
Flywheel bolted in 100% smoothly. So it is confirmed, the 535d flywheel is 100% required for this install. I found mine for $50 from Lithuania. Just be sure to follow procedure when torquing down flywheel Again when I have some more free time I will update with a DIY Instructions. Please see below for flywheel photos

11.4.19 Update Photos of Transmission

When I pull the old transmission out I will update with photos for comparison. If all goes well u can help members out in Houston reset their EGS module ISN rolling code on similar transmission swaps.

12.5.19 - Misc Photos during the swap.

12.10.19 - Flywheel Photos

Subscribed...I think if you can get it to work for the 3 series, it should also work for an M240i.

Just to confirm - the plan is to install the transmission from 535d in 2016 340i? Serious project.

What modifications did BMW note in the warranty denial response?

This is my same thinking as there are definitely a bunch of big power cars out there with the 8HP50 without issue.

I look at it as why not you're pulling the trans anyway and I got it for under $1000 with less mileage than I currently have. It seems complicated but the only difference between this swap and a zf8hp50 swap is the programming and coding portion.

Yeah, but for how many miles?

The 8HP50 hasn't been around long enough for a bunch of tuned cars to hit 50k miles, much less 100k miles.

Good luck. I do have a few thoughts though.

Was the trans used in any gas engines? Because your engine speeds will go much higher than a diesel's.

Also is the gearing the same? Could that affect your speedo, cruise control, etc.?

Lots of people have tune, downpipe, intake without busting their 8HP. Which tune did you have and what happened?

The 8HP50 has been out since 2014 and the 8HP45 since 2008. There are plenty of medium to high hp 335 running around and I've yet to see any significant complaints on the N55 forums about the 8HP45. Are there even mods out for the 8HP45 or 8HP50? Second, the Supra uses the 8HP51 (3rd gen) and the torque rating is the same as the 8HP50. Now I don't know what additionally has been done to the transmission, but I can't imagine that ZF beefed it up significantly over the 8HP50. We all know that Toyota made the Supra to be mod-friendly. That means the transmission better be able to hold up or else no point in making the car mod-friendly.

Again, are there any upgrades available for the 8HP45 or 50?

And if you include Europe with 335d etc which are torque monsters a gasoline 340 should be safe

Update 11.11.19

I have sucessfully cleared the ISN code out of the transmission without removing the mechatronics.

Quick comparison of GA8HP70 vs GA8hp50 on realoem. Looks like the bolts will line up just fine:
