My 2016 F30 has started to whine and it seems to be the steering. I notice it when starting cold in the garage.

Now this is driving me crazy, because I have looked in Google and YouTube and I cannot find any reference to steering fluid for F30s.

What's going on here. Where is the reservoir?

It's an electric assist steering rack, not hydraulic. There is no power steering fluid.

I can't provide any insight into why your rack would be whining though.

Get a video of the noise and post it.

What makes you think it is the power steering system. Does this only occur when turning the steering wheel? Since we don't have fluid, so no pump. Do you hear it when the car is stationary and steering wheel not being moved? So more details of the environment that causes the sound would help.

I am idle at the garage and hear a whine. When I turn the wheel left or right the whine increases. That's why I think it's related to the steering system.

It's fairly loud. Wife hears it too. With hood open it's really darn obvious. I'll have my mechanic look at it I guess.

I specifically turned it off to hear more clearly. So it's off when whining!

Hey guys,

I have a question, I have an f30 2015 335 x-drive, and a week ago I noticed my steering wheel has been getting heavy periodically, and steering is like wrestling with the steering wheel. Today, I'm coming back from work and the assisted steering is completely gone and I had a good workout. I want to know if I would damage anything if I kept driving on it bc I don't mind the workout.

no noise is coming from turning the wheel, I have only checked the fuse box in the engine bay on the passenger side and all fuses seem normal. I'm pretty sure it is either a fuse or an electric module or the EPS going out. no CEL.

pls let me know what you guys think. ty.

I think you need to have the rack checked out before you cause irreparable damage.

I second that. The steering rack is pretty expensive and what you described is not normal. There is an adjustment screw on the rack that can alter the weight of the steering wheel a little bit, and switching from comfort to sport mode also does this, but the car won't do it on its own. Something is wrong
