M3 estate crushed by West Midlands Police

How many owners will be checking the parts they are fitting are not stolen more closely now.

That was painful to watch!
I assume the driver absolutely knew his car was made of stolen parts (given the engine wasn't declared either), but I'd hope they wouldn't do this to someone who'd bought the parts in good faith though.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Don't know what the owner expected to happen when they chose to not report the engine change, was only a matter of time before the plates were ran and snow balling from there.

Looks like there could be more to this than the police twitter post shows.

Wow if that's true then I'm very surprised they posted the video!

so many performance cars getting stolen for the "car scene".

When I was looking into doing a conversion - a chap was offering me a full M3 comp interior for £300 and full front end for £2k. No way in hell that was legitimately sourced, so declined his offer.

Its not true. The vehicle was clearly illegal - it could not have been insured and was made of stolen components. Further in the thread you can see that there was no such 'court case' ordering the car returned.

Looks like WMP addressed the rumours

How many other of the M3 touring conversions have a similar story to this one with false listing with the DVLA & stolen parts being used either with or without the owner/purchasers knowledge?

The aggressive stance at the police from Unit 17 in response to this, won't be doing them any favours in the long run especially as they are a builder of these F81's

While I understand that the parts were stolen, the mods not declared to insurance and the dodgy number plate, I'm failing to understand how sourcing parts from other vehicles constitutes a "cut and shut" - must defeat the purpose of having a scrappie selling you used car parts.

Sounds like they welded (poorly) two cars together to make it, even the drivers own independent assessor said it was dangerous. So I can imagine it gets classed the same as a Cat A car meaning no parts can be salvaged and it must be destroyed

Shame about it being destroyed, there's some expensive bits off that car that could have been useful for someone else

They are no good to anyone if they are proven stolen.

Technically those stolen parts would belong to the insurance company of the person who claimed.

They published a video on Twitter earlier today answering some questions.

Really not sure what people's objection on social media amount to - it was made using stolen parts, badly welded together and not correctly declared to the insurers - well deserved to be crushed!

Don't the police often sell seized vehicles, irrelevant of whether their stolen or not?

Once it's declared unsafe/dangerous I suspect they're not allowed to

I presume there would have been quite a few safety/ liability issues in this case.

Stolen vehicles belong to the insurance company that has paid out on them.

The police do sell seized vehicles, usually under POCA rulings (Proceeds of Crime Act) - the high profile drug dealer cars, for example.

In this case, it's going to be physically virtually impossible to 'split' the car back to it's different legal owners (several insurance companies)

I also suspect that the insurance companies would probably find an upside to this; if people are more discerning about where their parts came from then there would be less market for these stolen cars and thus less insurance payouts. Possibly.

"Sorry officer I just assumed this S55 engine was £200 because there wasn't a car attached to it".

Even more reason to scrap it.
