thought i would share,
done an oil change on my 2013 318d today,
got myself an el cheapo 12v oil extraction pump from amazon about £15 and what a time saver,
i know not all all of you will like the idea but it made it so much easier and quicker!

didnt need to jack car up or lose the sump plug in hot oil lol

i measured what was pumped out by using a litre jug and just tipping into a bigger bucket when filled , just incase, and got out what seemed to be about 5.4 litres
which is weird as its suppose to be 5.2, but obvs the jug method isnt 100% accurate,
but happy that i got all of it out!

I use a suction pump for my interim changes. Did a little test with mine and got the same out as I would the sump method, certainly within 30ml. I do spend a few minutes fiddling with it to get the most out

The suction pump can be used to pull oil out of the filter housing which must be around the same as what it misses in the sump. Its quite a lot!

when i released the filer housing and filter you could hear a few hundred ml pour down,
so just turned the pump back on pushing and pulling the tube to get last out like you said,
sounded like a cheap prozzie sucking on your bellend hahaha

I'm planning to change my oil at 50% what is recommended, a pump would be ideal for this. Got any links to the ones you've used?

That's why I do the filter change first, then suck the oil out. Although I have a manual Pela pump. The electric one sounds great, could have a cuppa while you wait

where did you extract from? I have one that I used on my old cars, but it went through the dipstick tube.

exactly that
push the hose down the dipstick tube, connect pump to jumper points, and off you go,
pumped all of the oil out in under 5mins

It's hidden pretty well but my N47 has a dipstick.
I thought they all did, but they're just not easily visible at all.

It's right at the back of the engine I think, near the firewall and almost completely obscured by the plastic engine covers?

I just don't understand why anyone would not just do the job properly and drain the oil via the sump plug!
It is not that much of a bother and ensures that all old the old oil and any gunge that may have accumulated in there is removed.

The dipstick pipe is located over the lowest part of the sump, so sucking the oil out will get most of it out. Even if you drain via the plug, there would still be a coating of oil in the sump anyway.

And using a pump, manual or otherwise makes for a cleaner/quicker job.

Well its messy, you need to get under the car, not every one has a jack. On F31 335d its super easy with an extraction pump as engine has a dipstick and filter housing is accessible from the top. Its 15 min job tops.
I agree, on cars that have filters accessible from underneath the car it makes sense to drain as you are going under anyway.
Also, if any gunge accumulates in the sump then I suspect oil changes are not frequent enough.

Lidl had plenty of them in stock yesterday. I picked one up, not bad for a tenner. Hopefully it will make the job of doing oil changes easier as i do it quite regulary on my car.
