I dropped into my dealer this morning to have a look at options. My 840i goes back to the lease company in November. There is a low likelihood I can extend further at a sensible price - I have already done the informal 5 month extension to reach November.

The lead time on the 7 and 8 is more like 5 months at the moment, so shorter than most BMWs. The 8 LCI hits the showrooms in about May and the 7 is being replaced by a new model this year sometime. The 8 LCI is barely changed - very sensibly in my view, and I need to see the 7 to check that they haven't lost the plot! The discounts are well down on before, but hopefully I'll have been able to pass my test to become a full IAM member, which will give me access to the Forces scheme.

I'm looking at an 840i in GC or coupe form and a 7 in 30d/40d/40i/45e form - probably 740i.

I do still have my Mini, so if discounts are really poor, I guess I'll have just that until something appealing appears.

It'll be interesting to see what the deals are like on the 7 now, looking at Leasing.com where I found my deal from Berry Heathrow they are around £200-250 more PM, I calculated that the equivalent discount on my lease was around £32,000 on the 83k list when I ordered last July.

I nearly went for the 40i but thought the MHT 30d would suit it better (torque and range) but sometimes I wish I had a 6pot petrol instead and I also should have optioned the sunroof but heh ho.

Interesting comments about not being able to extend the lease. I suspect the popularity of lease / pcp is exasperating the problem. If you own a car, as people used to do in the olden days , you can sit it out and wait until supply sorts itself out. But if you have to return it / find the GFV to purchase, you are 'pushed' into paying more for whatever you can currently get.

Wait it until what? Cars have been too cheap for ages in the UK this isn't blip personal mobility is increasing in cost.

I also own a car do I get a gold star?

Spot on. Its probably not an issue for the wealthy folk on here but I know of kids with SEAT / Mini who are getting pushed into a not very nice corner. Fortunately I taught my kids to buy outright on a fixed loan.

The lack of PCP / lease shiny metal buying might also explain why this forum has gone quiet of late.

Hand it back and get something cheaper, or nothing at all, its only a car....

One of mine doesnt have a car and the other has a very cheap lease sorted via hubby... but as she says, she is happy to have something smaller and cheaper next time as its only a car and they dont need it....

Tesla forum is very busy, but then they can actually supply cars!

Different strokes for different folks.... I think the issue is that plenty got sucked into what seemed a very straightforward path and somehow the rugs been pulled.

I put daughter 2 into a 3 year old car (loan) as she commuted to London and the 107 wasn't cutting it. It's all paid off financially. Her friends were doing the same commute in decent low rate PCP cars and that decision at the time seem eminently sensible - reliable, fixed rate, change it in 3 years.

Now they're looking at over priced shit boxes and sourcing a new loan or getting shafted. Nothings a given and plenty will come out of this wiser.

Indeed. But then not sure anyone could predict this.... and I remember the advice to buy the biggest and best house I could as house prices only go up - and then for 5 years it was worth less (as much as 15% less!) than I paid for it...

Lessons, always there and sometimes when you least want them!

I didn’t push too hard to pin them down on the 7 discount, but it looked like circa 15k BMW support and I would guess at 5k from the dealer, based on the slightly more detailed discussion I had on the 8.

The BMW Forces scheme doesn’t show a 730d example, but the 740d (non M Sport) with an 82k list has a 29k discount https://www.bmw-ukforces.co.uk/pcp-c...op-299588-6734

I think I’m too early if I want the replacement in November, and my current lease deal is so cheap that it wouldn’t make sense to hand back earlier.

The 40i suits the 8GC perfectly - it doesn’t feel lacking in torque even after a 335d. It has the 500Nm version of the 40i engine and a ridiculously good gearbox. The 7 is quite a different beast though - more luxurious, quieter and a bit softer. I know that the 30d (and 40d) suits that wafting experience very well.

The likelihood of not being able to extend the lease further than the 5 months I have done, isn’t a major issue for me. I have another car of my own (a Mini) which I still rather enjoy. If the market is completely bonkers, I’d just sit it out and wait for some semblance of normality to return.

However my plan B is to pass the IAM test so I qualify for the Forces scheme. That has been delayed by Covid - I’ve just done the initial assessment so far.

That's mental, I think you ordered around the same time as me as we were both looking at the X3M at the time. I know you switched your order from pre-LCI to LCI so in theory you must have had one of the first build slots!

You'll forget about all this when it comes though. Are you financing through BMW FS? I've found in the past they're far more likely to throw some comp at you than the dealers are.
I know, crazy isn't it! I am financing through bmw fs, is it worth giving them a call?

Nothing ventured and all that...I had an issue back when I had the F30 and ultimately chopped it in for the F15. I'd written a retrospective letter of complaint to the dealer and copied in BMW FS customer services, who ended up waiving the first month's rental on the X5. Ok not a huge amount in the grand scheme of things, but still £600 when the issue had already been resolved and they didn't actually need to do anything.

What's going on value jumping up by 2k in less than 2 weeks?

Yeah the diesel torque and the MHT combine to suit the 7 if they offered the M340i engine with MHT in the 7 I would have got that (budget permitting) as it was it was a trade between the 650nm & 286hp + 11hp vs 500nm & 340hp, in the end the mpg range won (I'm on a budget) but I would not get a 7 without the executive drive option though as it's too soft otherwise in the bends that is money worth spending regardless of the engine.

20% I think is a made up number with no support, and unlike some others I dont see massive inflation continuing for the long term, short term blips will correct, and the main cause then will be wage inflation due to shortage of resource....

A bit of inflation is OK as long as we arent so far out of line with rest of world that our competitiveness suffers - but even then the ER mechanism should adjust to bring converted prices back into line....

But happy to look back next summer and see if we had or have 20% inflation. I am old enough to remember the days of inflation at those levels and none of the the causes then are in place now...

Still haven't had 20%. Short term supply issues continue forcing prices to be strong, but now we have the issue of wage inflation which may cause longer term consequences. And of course putting up interest rates puts up costs for consumers which encourages them to chase for higher wages....

Looking forward to my 10% pay rise in January... oh wait, I work in hospitality and we still aren't profitable !

Hospitality is in the luxury market unfortunately and thus will be one of the first victims of harder times ahead. It’s been a rough ride for a long time.
