Ideal winter tyre setup for 2017 340i xDrive

Hi All,

New member here! Just love the F30 generation 340i. I just got a pre owned 2017 340i xDrive, and wanted to know what wheel and tyre size would be ideal for snow conditions here in Toronto. I would prefer a non staggered setup if it is more economical and could work.

Current Vehicle info:
2017 340i xDrive
Estoril Blue
Track handling package
M Sport Brakes

Front wheel/tyre setup: 225/40 R19 89Y
Rear wheel/tyre setup:255/35 R19 92Y

I would appreciate inputs and some guidance

Thanks!

Are you planning to buy a dedicated set of wheels for the winter setup?

My friend has 245/40/18 square on an xDrive 340i for his winters. It fills up the wheel gap more but the sidewall will be taller if you don't mind that look. A lot of tires are available in that size as well.

Welcome to Bimmerpost.
Not what you are asking, but if I owned a car like yours, I would garage it and drive a beater with very good snow tires in the winter.

I understand this may not be an option for you. I very much like the colour and the engine in your car, enjoy!

Haha! Thanks! yeah that might not actually be an option. Yeah the B58 is really nice. Especially with the M power kit and Exhaust.

Gotcha. I will most prob run the same square setup as well. The -1 size will help with potholes and all.

Ive heard a lot about the Bridgestone Blizzaks. But looks like these cost north of $250 a piece! Any suggestions for a more economical tyre?

What ak22 said. 225/45R18 square setup is the proper size. 245/40 is too wide for the winter, although you'd likely be ok in Toronto.

Blizzaks are the way to go. Start looking for a used set on Kijiji. I got mine last Oct, used for 3 winters on a set of replica black BMW BBS look rims for $1100. The guy paid $3600 new for them, and returned his leased 4 series early after losing his job due to Covid.

If you think $250 a tire is expensive, you're in for a huge surprise if you have to replace one rear 255/35R19 run flat due to a screw in the sidewall.

I’m running 225/45/18 square setup with Nokian Hakkapelitta R3s

I run Blizzaks on my wife’s car, blizzaks are a bit noisy compared to the Hakkas.

In my experience with the exact same car, 225s are too narrow for the rear. I have tried a 225 for a week on x-ice3 tires and found myself breaking traction on occasion. A 235 might be the better choice for a square setup to resolve the traction issue.

225/45/18 all around is the perfect size.

Im running Sottozero 2 's Runflats

Great in slush and ice, not the best in heavy powder, or deep snow.

What I like about them the most is that in "the dry" winter conditions they don't feel like the typical mushy winter rubber. - you can actually somewhat drive spiritedly.

Thanks i128. I was actually looking at a set of wheels + Tires.
Wheel = 18x8.5 M5 Replica 5x120 35HS.
Tyre = 225/45 R18 SottoZero3 RFT 91H

What Im wondering is whether the 35 offset is good enough to clear the M-Sport brakes? Basically what would be the ideal wheel width and offset for running the 225/45 R18 on the 340i with the M-Sport brakes in the back and front?

8.5" is a little wide and will slightly stretch a 225 tire. 8" wide is better for 225.

Lol - I can break traction with any width tire in the winter

Narrower tires are better for cutting through snow, slush etc in winter driving conditions to ensure a better contact patch. It’s the main point of downsizing….

Thanks for the inputs everyone! Could anyone answer whether this wheel spec will clear the M-performance brakes?

Garage List
225/45/18 is ideal, you don't want to be driving on very wide tires in winter, especially in slush.

I run this tire size on 18x8.5 ET35 wheels

I have the M Sport brakes (same as the M Performance brakes), most 18" wheel spoke design should work but I recommend test fitting prior to installing the tires

I'm running 18 inch m5 replicas right now for winters. No damage to the wheels and only problem is that they turn a bit yellow after a year or 2 of winter. That's what happens if you buy cheap wheels IMO.
