I nearly bought a Rohloff equipped Thorn Raven tour but really can't justify it just yet. The bike in the above pic is a 2008 Specialised Tricross, very light, nowadays it would probably be called a gravel bike. Hand made wheels from Spa, not much of the original left mind but fits like a glove. I don't do much off road but it can cope with most things, actually run it on 28mm's.

In 2012 I rescued an old 90's Raleigh MTB frame and thought it would be a bit of fun to build it up into a tourer. I managed to get to Switzerland and back on that little beast, the build was about £250 , new 8 speed groupset, butterfly bars, square taper BB and amazingly some Mavic wheels from Rose in Germany back in the day when bike parts were cheap. It's now the shopping / leave at the station runaround.

Here's the beastie in Koln in Germany with the Hohenzollern Bridge to the right and Cathedral in the background. If you haven't done the Rhine its well worth it if you don't like hills

Yes mine is a Nomad with the Rohloff Hubb, I paid nigh on £4k for it with a custom 'Mercedes Silver' paint job. It seems an awful waste just sitting in the garage...... I need to pluck up the courage for the OP and get back on it

I have never done Germany, all of my Euro trips have been Italy, France and Spain, I would love to do Germany and maybe Austria where I have done quite a bit of walking over the years.

You look well loaded up in that pic JR, I carry as least as possible and end up coming home stinking like a ferret !!!

If you dislike camping, you don't need to do it. For example, I like to go somewhere in the wilderness with my friends once a month, taking special equipment. I just enjoy it. And if I don't go to a normal toilet for a couple of days, nothing will happen to me. For example, I don't care if I don't sleep in a warm crib. It's not for comfort that I go to wild places. The most important thing is to take a break from the frantic pace of the city, which I hate. I also like to buy something for camping, so I recently bought a cool LED flashlight on Amazon -- https://www.amazon.com/Vont-Flashlig.../dp/B089T8HDBV.
