Saying farewell to an old friend

Not a pet but a car.

In 2005 I part ex'd a knackered Renault 5 for a brand new Hyundai Getz
Cost to change was £2500 and it was a runaround for my wife and associated school run mum duties. New cost was £5500.

Now it may have had the magical 5 year warranty back in the day but Hyundai more than made up for that with service costs. So after year 3 I serviced it. Oil change (castrol GTX ) and spark plugs every year (spark plug change was 12k) and it never saw the main dealer again.

It was passed down to my son 8 years ago who ran it as a shed but dutifully returned it for MOT and servicing.

In the last few years, shocks and the usual CV boots.

140,000 miles later loads of spannering and the old girl went in today for its last rights (MOT)..In prep another CV boot change last week (£12 for the stretchy ones), a holts exhaust repair kit (£6) and a rocker cover gasket to stem the massive oil leak (£14)

It failed on a rotted subframe amongst some other stuff- took it to a mate to weld and too far gone. Rear on its way out as well...they're doable but 3 hours labour each.

Amazingly my local scrappy does an online quote and offered £218 for the shed so I'm up there and she's history. 16 years..fair play . The guy on the right is checking there's a battery in it and the boot isn't full of rubbish

That car has served you very well indeed, especially considering it was a bargain basement model and the DIY running costs.

I'll bet you turned round to have one last look as you walked/drove away.

Indeed, I was walking away turned around and took the pic. The guy on the right actually stopped and I said 'its for posterity mate'

Stonking value with hindsight. No 1 daughter (a bit of a tree hugger) is hanging onto her 2012 Citroen C1 and I've been doing the spannering on that.... The Hyundai (although much older ) was just so much more 'accomplished' than her C1 but we'll see how that turns out....Toyota 3 pot so will probably last the course.
